HA! Yearly controversy is right ... rumble is more like it. In this forum we are going to witness a yearly throwdown! Are you ready? To the local readers of this forum, and to the dozens who read it world wide, I ask you, are you ready? Steelhead fishing fans and Thunder Bay Fishing Forum readers, are you reeeeeeaaaaaady? Coming to us from the great site of Thunder Bay Fishing, Roger's brainchild, is a thread about catching steelhead. Ladies and Gentlemen, LETS GET READY TO RUMMMBLEEEE? On this side of the river, wearing waders and a fly fishing vest and smelling of fire brine cure and Tim Hortons coffee, hailing most likely from the McIntyre River - somewhere between the college and university (but don't mention it, because it's a secret ... despite that it's in the middle of town with 137 trucks parked along it's banks), we have angry Steel "the fish are the exclusive right of a few ... so don't help anybody" Header #1. And on the opposite side of the river, also wearing waders and a fly fishing vest, and also smelling of Tim Hortons coffee, hailing from local rivers - MacIntyre, Neebing, Current, etc., is a little more friendly Steel "I will let people know when the fish start running, and places to target them" Header #2. This a 2 - 3 month yearly bout - not sanctioned by Roger or Thunder Bay Fishing, for the right and tips to catch steelhead.

Do you want GPS coordinates of our favourite spots on the lake too?
  7. 12 points
Arrow, Jesse, superior is good as well, northern lights... No one wants yor coordinates bigfishboy, it's a generalized question, DB. Simple questions brings out sarcasm and the jerk in most fisherman, what I have found that Thunder Bay is famous for. The slogan for this place should be "Thunder Bay, great fishing. Figure it out for yourself and don't talk to us because we're all too good for you"

Mother Nature won't clean up after you. We leave enough tackle at the rivers and lakes. There's no excuse for this. Please leave only your respect and gratitude.

Well, the renovations are complete (aside from some touch up paint). Thanks to all those who offered advice. I promised photos if it turned out … here they are. Happy to answer questions, we (my brother and I) learned a little in the process. J. p.s. We used Gatorskinz to cover part of the floor (I mentioned Gatorskinz in my other thread), and for the little seat in the front of the boat. I like the looks of the wood bench seats. J.

I tried emailing you and sending you a private message the last time you made some posts here so I guess I'll make a post here as you seem to like to pop up once in awhile to make some noise. If you have something personal against me, fine, I can take it. It isn't the first time someone didn't like this site. Always seems to come up from time to time. So what you need to do is grow up a bit and either email me, private message me or hell, even give me a call. I'm in the book. I have no idea what I did to you personally or otherwise. But as of this moment your posts won't show up until I read them first and I will make the decision on whether or not they will be allowed to be posted here. Roger

Logical but real. Wanna catch big fish? Fish where there are big fish. Huge tip. Turn the fish symbols off of your finder!!!! Learn to read it. When trying Little Joe’s in the spring use a larger Colorado blade. There are no baby fish in spring. Look for the dragon fly hatch. All those dragon flies you see above the trees are young drying out their wings that just moulted. FISH THERE!!!!! If you know all about your favourite fish, learn about the life cycle on what they feed on. At different times of the year. Discouraged when the may flieshatch? Fish where the may flies hatch from. It ain’t gonna be about the weeds that grow in firm bottoms or rock piles. Follow me for more tips. Imma gonna spill my guts on the crap I learned!!!! Roger.

Its a time when your actions can directly effect others. Your decision can lead to several people becoming sick, placed in an ICU or death to one of your elders or someone else's. You have no control whatsoever of this virus as far as who contacts it but we can control ourselves. You cannot know who already has it or is carrying the virus. You can only control yourself. What decisions you make will affect others. It is a pandemic, thats science not my opinion. I base my actions solely on how it will affect others during this time and I will make sacrifices to ensure I do not aid in the transmission of this virus, especially with the mutated version that is much easier to pass along. I have taken lots of risks with myself over my lifetime, but I will not take unnecessary risks with the safety of others. I can follow rules and common sense for the next year until everyone receives the vaccine.

Hello everyone this topic was just brought to my attention "Kaff" i'm sorry if it seemed that we didn't want to sell you more suckers as this was not the case. We took some preorders which we always do so we know what to expect to have in stock at the time, a Large majority of customers even came in and paid for phantom suckers that were not even in stock yet and if we didn't have them then they would receive a refund. We ordered a large sum of suckers from there different trappers prior to the last few weeks of Pickeral season. One trapper pulled his traps because he was pulling up dead suckers the oxygen gets low in certain lakes up to that point there was no issue with suckers from him, the second trapper had some personnel matters that he didn't for see he pulled his traps and gave us short notice he wasn't trapping anymore this winter, and the third trapper came through with a load of suckers but we needed all 3 deliveries to come in which didn't happen which was out of my control. So at that point i had to fill pre orders and prepaid suckers so yes as the old saying goes "i was stuck between a rock and a hard place" this was the case. Thats all it was, it was not to hold bait that was not accounted for, for other customers. So even though the tank seemed like there was a large amount of suckers up for grabs there really wasn't. "Trust me i wish there was at all times." I hope this helps with what happened for peace of mind! and again i apologize for any inconvenience Thank you Adam

Here is my take on using artificial lures for lake trout. First we have to understand how a lake trout hunts. If you take a look at the placement of a trout's eyes on it's head. They are near the top of it's head much like a walleye. They usually spot their food source above them. Sure they can look down but they love to ambush from below. Now check out a salmon's eye placement. Their eyes are placed way down their heads which is perfect for horizontal hunting, almost like a pike. Adding to this, now, is water temperature. In the summer lake trout are in their preferred temperature zones in the depths of a lake. In the winter this changes and they hunt using the whole water column as the water is basically the same temperature..... COLD! Lake trout can be shallow, mid depth or deep. Now I just want to take a minute to dispel a common myth that lake trout will get the 'bends" when caught out of deep water while ice fishing. They won't if they are allowed to burp. When you catch a lake trout from deep water, when 50they burp, you will sometimes see big bubbles coming up in the hole. That's from the trout. Lure selection, White is a very common and great choice for lake trout. People think the trout can see it better, shows up better, etc. As I mentioned earlier white is a great choice because trout hunt looking up. And now I ask you........ What is the colour of every fishes belly? In my opinion, that is why white is a good choice. Silvers, golds, blues, black, and pink are my other choices. I talk to many people and they like to use a minnow, be it a sucker, cisco and for where allowed, smelts. These are all great choices. Two of these bait choices live and feed quite a bit of the time suspended. Suckers like the bottom. Many anglers like to hover their bait 1-2 feet off bottom. And yes you can catch trout this way. But try bringing that bait up off the bottom. If you are in 50 feet try suspending the bait at around 35-40 feet. I use this analogy, You are standing next to me. I point at a white rabbit in a snow cover field. I have to really point and describe to you where that rabbit is so you can see it. Now I ask you if you can see the plane flying over head. You see it pretty much right away. Same thing happens under the ice. I have caught trout right under the ice over 100 feet of water and they are usually pretty big ones too. Now back to artificial baits. You can use what ever you like it's pretty much all the same concept. Also electronics will enhance your game a 1000 fold as you can see where in the water column the trout are. I like to start jigging at 1/2-2/3 of the water depth I'm fishing. So if I'm in 40 feet I like to start between 20 and 30 feet. and so on. If nothing seems to be attracted I'll use the sit and wait. That means I won't move the lure at all. I can only remember once that a trout came and hit the stationary lure. But when you see one approaching your lure, start reeling the lure up. You can jig while reeling up. The most important thing is to keep moving away from the trout. Watch what happens. You just increased your odds on a hook up. Here's some lure tips. Try inserting a Hopkins spoon into a tube. Spoon action tube style. (I know Gussy wrote about this and it isn't my idea either. It's a bass tactic from back in the 80's!) Try vibrating lures such as a Zonar, Cicada and I can't remember the name of the blade bait but it's my new favourite and it's in the same aisle in DNR as the Swedish pimples. Rattle traps and Rattlin Raps work but I find that the sink to slow.. Anyways there's way more and I'll add a part 2 soon.. Roger

It was a large group of people so pointing fingers at any individuals is pointless. I’m not interested in assigning blame. I simply wanted to return a beautiful area I spent many days fishing in my youth to how I remembered it. I can see this is a sore spot for you and that’s fine. I was simply asking for assistance from anyone who cared to help. As an update 6 of us showed up that evening and the river was looking much better when finished work. I would like to thank everyone who did come out as you made the job much easier to complete. To answer your original question, we cleaned it up because the attitude you exhibit is how our wild places get destroyed. Saying “well I didn’t make the mess so I won’t clean it up” is not the example I want to set for my kids. Hurketthunter

And you need to learn to be quiet sometimes, I tend to say that inthe nicest way possible. . How about you try pulling them through 3-4” of ice while the bob up and down. Hands down hardest fish to hold. I rarely keep fish I decided to keep a few that day. Why even take the time out of your day to say that? You aren’t gaining anything. I’m not forcing you to watch the video.

This is a bit of a rant but I think it needs to be said. I am an avid angler. I am also a local to the Pass Lake area. Being at the launch on a fairly regular basis, I have noticed a huge change this year. I have also talked to other anglers that have been going there for many years and they have noticed this issue as well. Common ramp etiquette has disappeared. Never have I been told before "just wait a minute" while they put away their stuff and tidied their boat or cleaned multiple fish. What happened to clearing the ramp so other boats can get in or out? Don't tell me to wait...you moved it out of the water keep moving off the ramp. Also if you choose to clean your fish at shore the makeshift dock is not a personal cutting board. Blood and guts left on it. Leaving carcasses to sit out and rot and STINK, to be dragged throughout the area by wild critters. At least have the decency to throw it into the water. Maybe even away from the ramp so people don't step on it. The dock is for commercial fishing. Don't park and block it, don't back your boat trailer onto it... it's not yours. This has always been a nice place, and everybody I have encountered before was always nice. If somebody needed a hand loading a boat help was was just offered. I am disgusted and dissapointed. Please can we just use some common sense because its getting out of hand here. Respect the space and respect your fellow anglers. Thank you for reading my lengthy rant I hope as a group we can try and make sure this stops. I would hate to lose this public launch.

This thread should be locked. Who cares if people are white, brown, red purple or green. If they are breaking a rule it should be dealt with by the proper people, not the Thunderbayfishing PD. There are plenty of ways to report and if the proper party deems it important enough to deal with they'll get to it. If people have full rights to the land there's a historical reason for it. Clean up after yourself and take an extra bag home. There is no race or colour that doesn't litter. There also is no race or colour that doesn't clean up after someone else. There's always bad apples. We're fortunate enough to have hundreds of other Lakes and Rivers to drag your trailers to. If someone is there that you don't like or if the prime spot is taken and what's left isn't good enough move on to plan B.

Very interesting topic here. Let me clear a few things up for you. First I am out in this area camping and fishing most of the summer so I am familiar with the area and people. 1. The CO's are out there often, pretty much every weekend and yes they have jurisdiction in that provincial park, they have jurisdiction anywhere in Ontario. I saw them out there on May long and they are aware of the campers and know the people well. 2. Those trailers are all owned by people of status and yes they have the right to be there as long as they wish when they wish. This has been dealt with in the past and is now fully clarified. 3. If you were unfortunate enough to have an issue in that area, a break down or worse an accident, these people are the first ones to jump to your rescue. I have personally seen them drive great distances to help break downs, dragging out a moose, fixing trailers, pulling out stuck trucks and are more than accommodating when you pull in any of those spots to park your camper for the weekend. 4. Other than Sturge all the other areas have plenty of camping spots on any given weekend. 5. Finally and most importantly, I don't take threats to peoples personal property lightly. If anything happens to someones stuff out there I will gladly share my screen shots of these threats with the owners, police and COs. We are all outdoors people and need to look out for each other, not stoop to the level of criminals. I go out there to get away from that kind of crap, not find more of it. Hopefully we will all get to enjoy the summer soon and take advantage of the amazing places we have here in NW Ontario.

Yes, the lines of vehicles parked along the road and anglers lined up to access rivers doesn't give it away ... its posting on this forum. And so what. We all started fishing steelhead at some point, and we all had questions. This board and TBF is for sharing knowledge and asking questions. For the record, I have always found mornings best for steelhead. If you're new to steelhead fishing, ask questions, observe what others are doing and where, and spend time learning the water and what to look for. This last bit - in my opinion - is probably the most important, and can only be had with time and experience. The MacIntyre is an excellent river for steelhead, but expect a fair number of people and a few idiots on the river. Still, it's probably your best bet for fish in town. Despite the opinions of some, no one has rights to 'the' river. But be courteous, use some etiquette when fishing, and enjoy yourself. And ignore the passive aggressive posts on this board. Roger does a service to the local fishing community with TBF, as a place to ask questions and share knowledge.

After a brutal winter of deep snow, slush, windy days and frigid cold the last day of trout season was a real blessing. Lake conditions and weather were perfect and best of all the lakers were biting. The last fish of the day put the icing on the cake. A 39.5 incher decided to chomp the bait set-up on a tip-up. After a 10 minute hand to hand tug of war she surrendered. A quick measurement and a couple pictures and she was released.

Roger, how much is needed to save this site? I've only been a member for a short while but I already find myself on here 5or 10 times a day. Roughly what is the yearly cost to run this site? What about charging a small yearly membership fee. There must be a few hundred active member and if you charged 10 or 15 bucks a year I'm sure that most of the guys would stick around. It might also help keep punk kids off of here which in turn could cause less problems for you. Let's all keep this site going together!

We braved the blustery conditions today and amongst our party of 6 we landed 8 lake trout, releasing 2 small ones. No pike. White was the colour. From what we saw, most everyone had some type of ice shelter to stay out of the wind - even those that walked in from the road and pulled their sleighs. MNR said 53 anglers today, and I remember seeing on the Evenbrite page that today was sold out - so about 300 people. Weather conditions kept most home I guess - especially yesterday (at least the smart ones 😉 ). Posting a couple pics from the check-in station. Everything went smoothly on the way out, very educational and friendly. And hot chocolate! Check out the info board with angler numbers and results from throughout the week. Cheers!

Here’s what happened and what I did. I went for a weekend with a buddy. We left at four am. Needed headlights to get there. Once there it was day light and didn’t shut off the head lights. This was like back in 1986. Had a twelve footer with a 9.9 Johnson pumpkin head. Loaded the boat with all our stuff. All the camping gear including a partner mini p 3 chain saw for fire wood. We had a great weekend. once done and back at the truck is when we realized my mess up. Dead battery. He was freaking and planning to walk out. The only tools I had was a 12 inch crescent wrench and a couple of screw drivers. So I took the bar off the chainsaw. Cut the pull cord off the outboard and weaved it the best I could into a loop. I disconnected the belt from the alternator put the loop around the pulley and put it on the drive sprocket of the chain saw and spun it for a whole tank of gas. Lesson learned. The key to the ignition must be on! Haha. Ran another tank through the chainsaw and put the belt back on and the alternator charged the battery enough to start the truck!!!

Thank you everyone for the support❤️ The rod I was using for jigging was a 36” medium fenwick world class with a 1000sized rapala f2 reel spooled with 10lb braid and a 12lb leader. Long rods are nice for fishing outside , I don’t have much of a review on the rod yet because that was my first trip with it so far I love it, super sensitive and super light.

They are following the water management plan which was developed with public and scientific input. The brook trout season is currently closed to protect staging fish. They don't spawn until late October into November; the current flows are having no effect on brook trout spawning, fertilization nor incubation. The water management plan will increase flows (first Monday in October) throughout the incubation period in effort to protect the river Brook trout spawn. You have to remember this is a "system" water management plan which attempts to balance the spawning fish on both Lake Nipigon (the source of the river flows) and the river. Have you taken a look at the lake level and inflows throughout the spring and summer? Simply posting the river flow only shows a small portion of the larger picture. Very dry year, where is the water supposed to come from? Maybe crack the water management plan or take a look at all the other factors before you post a limited amount of misleading information? P.S. salmon are non-native and emphasis is placed protecting native brook trout populations on BOTH the river AND lake!

Well I want to catch a longnose because I am trying to catch every species of fish in Ontario, and I haven't caught a longnose yet. (just the ones that can be caught on a rod and reel, I cannot see myself trying to catch any minnows, although there are people who fish for minnows). I do this because I love fish biology and really enjoy researching the different types of fish, their life histories and identifying them. It also provides a fun challenge to try and catch new things and explore new fishing locations. This all started when I destroyed my shoulder and couldn't play sports anymore. So, I needed a new hobby, and I really liked fishing. My dad always told stories about a weird "dogfish" he caught as a kid, and I wanted to see what they look like. So I researched them, found a few spots around my house where they could be found, what people catch them on etc. Then I went to try and catch one and it was a blast! So, I expanded that to other species like carp, catfish, bass. Now the longnose sucker is the fish I haven't caught at this time of year, and they are not anywhere around my house back home, so this is the best shot I have at catching one. As for why would you want to catch suckers in general, they are abundant, easy to catch, put up a decent fight, and taste pretty good (bones are a little annoying). I don't tend to keep many of them. I only end up keeping the smaller ones because I deep fry them to remove the bones, but the bones in larger ones don't crisp up as well. Apparently you can also pickle or can suckers, but I don't have the fancy equipment to try stuff like that. Anyway, hope this is a good response, feel free to think I'm crazy. This is something I find fun, and I will keep doing it so long as it stays fun.
