  1. Gentlemen, i'd like to discuss time of day for prime springtime steelheading. I'm not an experienced steelhead angler, but i've got a few years under my belt as a fly angler, so i'm just looking to better my chances of capitalizing on the steelhead runs that we get here on the North Shore. Of course the afternoon and evening up until dusk are the most convenient hours to head out fishing and wade out into your favourite spot, but i'm wondering if the early hours of the morning when you're stepping down to the river as the sun rises is going to better my chances of hooking into some of that chrome goodness??? I'm a young man at 23 years old and I love to get up and start my day extra early, so i'm not afraid to be at my spot before sun up, but i'm wondering if any of the gents with more experience than myself can let me know if it'll better my chances at all. I'd love to get my hands on some of these beautiful steelhead. I went in the mid afternoon the other day and was casting my fly to hundreds of keeper sized fish that were practically stacked on top of eachother but nothing would bite no matter how many hours I spent swapping out presentations and creating variations in the way I stripped my line back. Any advice for a young steelheader is appreciated. Cheers

    Steelhead Time

I know its still at least a few days before the chrome make a run for it. Anyone else getting the itch? I literally have a hard on a mile long, especially with rain in the forecast. If your wife or family is driving you nuts, post a pic of your steel from last year or years past. Here's one of mine from last year.

    Chromers

Anybody able to share some insight on when the steelhead will start moving to the tribs? New to the area and new to steelhead fishing in general so any help is appreciated! Which tribs to go to for better chances would also be super but I know most guys don't want to give up their spots. Would love to hook up with some chrome when they start hitting the mouths and when they begin their runs 9foot 8wt Fly rod, 7foot 6wt fly rod, and 7foot spin rod.

    First water to "Open up"

I was in Grand Marais on tuesday, The marina was wide open with no ice, even on the edges.... i was dying walking on the beach skipping stones, knowing i could be throwing a spoon for northern, steel and lakers... --i am wondering what was the first area/bay of superior or any river that opened up to become fishable last spring close to Thunder Bay, and not in US.-- i am seriously considering picking up a US day license, and bringing a canoe into the marina in Grand Marais LOL...

    Rant

Fall time salmon steelhead will be coming up soon, hopefully this the people that keep using Davis point down harstone road will stop leaving it looking a garbage dump. I know the experienced fisherman avoid this spot since there are way better areas to fish. Just hopefully more people will clean up after them selves . End of rant best of luck fishing to everyone!
  11. Today during my morning fish I was fortunate enough to hook up with a gorgeous looking male, as I just finished gloving the fish in shallow water and was reaching into my pocket for my forceps.... but they were nowhere to be found. ( I left them in my vehicle obviously). I attempted (without removing the fish from the water) to gently remove my hook from its mouth with my hands. Soon I realized that this hook was embedded into the side of its mouth much too well for me to maneuver it free in little time (with my hands) and without removing the fish from water. Therefore i chose to cut the line as close to the hook as possible and release the fish (he swam away vigorously). I chose to do this because removing a trout from water seems (so i've read) to cause much less damage to the fish than leaving a hook in its mouth (if this even causes any). I will never EVER forget forceps again. Did i make the right choice here?

    Advice for a Newbie???

Hey everyone, I'm new to this site as well as new to steelhead and river fishing in general. Just wondering if anyone has any general tips in terms of gear that I should be picking up. Things that I'm looking for are types of rods, length, reels..anything really. I know a few guys who are pretty avid anglers and have offered to take me out but I'd like to have some of the appropriate gear before I ask. I already have a really nice pair of chest waders courtesy of my mother in law (Christmas), but anything else? In terms of budget I don't want to spend too much at this point...I like to try something out before I make any significant investments. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
