magicman 2 Report post Posted May 13, 2011 Trying living out in MB. Those little freaks are everywhere out there. Anytime I went fishing I would be covered in them. I am not talking 1 or 2. I am talking 10-20 if you were in the long grass for more a minute. They also love Oak trees. They wait above in the branches and ambush you from above. If there are oak trees there are definatley ticks around. The deer ticks are the ones that can carry lime disease. They are alot smaller than wood ticks. Always be sure to check yourself over in EVERY crease. They like your hairline and your bikini line. Basically the moist and sweaty parts. Like the country song "I wanna check you for ticks". Freaky little buggers.
Guest Smack Um Report post Posted May 13, 2011 Yeah there are lots more wood ticks to the west of us for sure but they seem to be making there way east to the Thunder Bay Area.I got one on me just recently in the South Gillies Area but just like you said above only one the first time I got one on me was a couple of years ago but they are becoming more common in our area.I don't think wood ticks carry lime disease but they are disgusting little buggers especially the first time......Hurry up get it off..get it off...and all that stuff! robbo 8 Report post Posted May 13, 2011 wood ticks are creepy crawly to northwest newbies all right but they're nothing to freak out over. I like watching peoples reaction when they can't get them off fast enough - like they've got 2" fangs or they're gonna dive under your skin and head for the brain! All they do is walk around and sneak their flat head under your skin for some blood. I'll take them over the mosquitoes, black flies, deer flies, horse flies, and whatever other flying teeth that's out there! Of course with the deer ticks coming in, which they are, the threat of lyme disease does make me a bit wary. Oh well. Quote going fishing is okay, going catching is great! Resource Pimp 60 Report post Posted May 13, 2011 According to the internet, 8 different ticks can carry lymes. Deer ticks are the most prevelant carrier. They are out in abundance this year. Found 4 in the past 3 days. Quote "If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles." Click on banner to visit Bedas Lodge. smokerscully1 16 Report post Posted May 14, 2011 Problem with Lymes disease is diagnosis --easy to treat. Ticks can carry things way worse than Lymes--Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever for one. We're talking whats possible--not whats likely.Ticks aren't anymore a big deal than mosquitoes. Guest Dano67 Report post Posted May 14, 2011 Although the odds of getting Lyme's disease in the T Bay area is slim it is something to be aware of.Two years ago in the summer of 09 my wife asked me to look at a rash under her arm. I knew the bullseye rash with a red dot in the middle of it was a classic symptom of Lyme's so we went to get it checked out. After spending the better part of two days at the hospital having tests done(and let me tell you - if it wasn't for my insistance on testing for lyme's they wouldn't have done it)and seeing numerous specialists it came back positive for Lyme's. The doctors were all very surprised at the diagnosis and she caused quite a stir in the local medical establishment. We even had a visit from Health Canada to answer questions on where we had been and when. Anyway, after a round of antibiotics, and follow up tests done months later, she turned out perfectly healthy. Thats the thing with Lyme's, if you catch it early before it starts causing damage, it is easy to cure.So to make a long story short, there is Lyme's around T Bay and it's something to think of if you have a tick bite or if you have weird symptoms happening to you.I hope it doesn't happen to anyone else.Dan

Guest jackfish pete Report post Posted May 16, 2011 I got my first ticks when I was twelve. I picked about eight off of me at Pigeon River and threw them into the water above High Falls. The next day, I came to school, only to find two on the back of my neck. When my teacher saw me killing one (with the compass in my geometry kit), she thought I would need to be inspected! I showed the VP that the ticks' heads were not stuck in my flesh (which can happen when you remove them), went back to class, and put the surviving tick down my classmate's neck (that's you "The Newbie")Since then, I have almost come to appreciate the little buggers, since they gave me an hour of entertainment in a very dull year.Nonetheless, I still wear long sleeves when I go to grassy areas such as Pigeon River. Nnev 70 Report post Posted May 16, 2011 Picked up one in the black sturge area last week. Those suckers are everywhere.I'm pretty sure the health clinic is giving away tick kits. They have a picture of both the deer and wood tick, an alcohol swab and a pair of tweezers inside a pill bottle. You can bring your tick in to get tested. Not a bad thing to have in your tacklebox.
