uncle 19 Report post Posted May 16, 2011 Use vaseline on them if they are embedded. Suffocates them.No infectionApparently pulling them out with tweezers is the best way to go, being careful to bring them out in one piece. Putting vaseline on them suffocates them and they back out but they puke first which could contain an infection.
WalleyeWayne 137 Report post Posted May 17, 2011 Our cottage is located at Bears Pass on Rainy Lake and we're very familiar with wood ticks. The dog gets absolutely covered every spring and it's a constant battle pulling the ticks off her. The ones we miss, we find a couple days later when they have quadrupled their size after sucking blood for 2-3 days. The wood ticks do bite and that's when you usually notice them. It's a small nip and when you scratch at it you notice the tick. We've tested two of them over the last several years and both were found to be wood ticks, not deer ticks. It cost us $75 to have the tick tested at the local vet...so we quit doing that quickly enough! Basically if you get swelling, with circles forming similar to the trunk of a tree, then head off to the Dr. You can wrap yourself for protection, but when you're around the Fort Frances area, they're gonna find you! I know of no effective repellent that you can use but after you've found a few on yourself, you kinda of accept it - or you leave the area and never go back. LOL! Like black files, they're usually gone towards the end of June.
