$3,000 Fine For Shooting Across Trans-Canada Highway

A Michigan resident has been fined a total of $3,000 for shooting across a roadway at a deer.

Paul Witter of Pinconning, Michigan, was fined $2,000 for discharging a firearm across the traveled portion of the roadway and $1,000 for possessing illegally killed wildlife.

The court heard that on November 12, 2010, Witter was traveling east on Highway 17A, near Kenora. Seeing a deer on the south side of the highway, Witter pulled over on the north side of the road and shot the deer. He then exported the deer parts from Ontario.

An individual who observed the incident contacted the Ministry of Natural Resources. Conservation officers followed up with an investigation that led to the charges.

Justice of the Robert McNally heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Kenora, Ontario, on April 12, 2011.

The ministry reminds hunters that it is illegal to shoot from, down or across a public road.

For further information on hunting regulations, please consult the 2010-2011 Hunting Regulations Summary, available at ServiceOntario/Government Information Centres, from licence issuers and at ontario.ca/hunting.
