Smelts as bait?

Recommended Posts

eddylives

Myself and others are wondering what the status of smelts as bait is?

Can smelts be used as bait anywhere or are they restricted?

Are we able to use smelts caught in Lk Superior as bait in Superior only? Or can they be used in other water bodies?

Do they have to be dead or can they be used live?

If they are cured with salt to kill off any possibility of the introduction of live spawn are they ok to use?

As there seems to be confusion over the regulations would it be possible to give straight answers.....not quotes of the confusing language used in the official regulations?

Thanks

Using live smelt as bait is prohibited everywhere in Ontario.

The possession and use of dead smelt as bait is currently prohibited in Fisheries Management Zones (FMZ) 2, 4 and 5. This can be found in the box entitled “Other Zone Regulations” located in the sections for FMZ 2, 4 and 5 in the 2013 Recreational Fishing Summary.

Dead smelt caught in Lake Superior may be used as bait in Fisheries Management Zone 6. Remember that you need a fishing licence to dip for smelt.

It is illegal to dump the contents of your bait bucket into the water or within 30 metres of any lake, pond, river or stream.

For more information on Rainbow Smelt, see the article in Saturday April 27, 2013 Thunder Bay Chronicle Journal.
