grouse survival

Recommended Posts

with the spring we had i was wondering if this will affect grouse hatch survival.

the last 2 years have been really good but the springs very mild

Do grouse mate at same time every year by length of days (photoperiod) similar to ungulates. or do they wait for snow to melt?

what can we expect for this years survival. worst in 3 years worst in 5 , or a 10 year low?

thanks

There are several studies that show that grouse will delay drumming, breeding and nesting as a result of late snowfall. A hen will lay 8-14 eggs (approx. one per day) and the incubation period will last 24-26 days. Chicks are able to leave the nest as soon as they hatch and can fly within 5 days.

We should still see a good hatch of grouse even with the late snow.
