Guest MNR Report post Posted June 27, 2013 Fisheries are Now Monitored on a Broad Scale The Broad Scale Monitoring Program (BsM) was created by the MNR to evaluate Ontario’s fisheries on a broad (zone and provincial) level. This is done by collecting information from a representative number of lakes in each Fisheries Management Zone (FMZ)2013 Lake List_Northwest (2).doc in a standardized way, once every 5 years. Broad-scale monitoring involves the collection of detailed information about each lake for a relatively small portion of the total number of lakes in Ontario. The number of lakes included in the BsM Program is sufficient for managing and reporting on fisheries at the FMZ level. It includes the collection (by netting) of information on fish species and fish communities, physical and chemical water characteristics, aquatic invasive species, and fishing effort. The Broad Scale Monitoring Program is designed to: § describe the distribution, amount and diversity of fishes in Ontario § estimate the current state and changes over time of Ontario’s fisheries § identify natural and human-caused stresses affecting fisheries § provide reports on the state of fisheries and aquatic environments in Ontario See attached list of lakes where monitoring will take place.
