Tournament Fish Limits

Recommended Posts

Most of the bass tournaments around here are team tournaments with a daily limit of 5 fish. Now that an individual can have up to 6 bass in their livewell, would it be legal for a single competitor to bring in 5 bass to be weighed in at one time and released?

No it would not be legal for you to bring in 5 bass to be weighed. The fishing regulations allow a person who is angling under a sport or conservation fishing licence from a vessel to exchange one or more of the live fish that the person has caught for another of the same species if:

(a) the live fish that are caught and not immediately released are held in a livewell that is mechanically aerated at all times; and

(B) the fish that is being released will survive after release and is released into the waters from which it was caught.

As well, a person who is fishing under a sport fishing licence may hold in the livewell no more than an aggregate of six largemouth bass or smallmouth bass.

So bottom line is you can exchange fish while you’re fishing from a boat that is equipped with a mechanically aerated livewell (minimum 46 litre capacity). You can hold up to 6 bass in the livewell while fishing. However, once you are done fishing and are heading for the weigh-in, you are only allowed to be in possession of your daily limit, which in this area is four.
