Pro fisherman-Stud Muffin 420 Report post Posted November 3, 2014 okay dude . you stated you shot a deer at 400 yds with an ought6 sighted for 200 yds . with a 200 yd zero a bullet fired from a 30-06 hits 20+ inches low at 400. no mentions of adjusting 10 or 12 clicks up , or that you lasered the deer at 400 and squeezed 20 high.so i just assumed the rest of what you stated was also false 1 Quote 2016 Dog Lake Open Champion. robbo 8 Report post Posted November 3, 2014 Hey, going out for some fun and/or serious target practice is awesome. I wish I had time to go more often. However, I can't, for any reason, determine what would make someone want to try to lob a rifle round into an animal from that distance? Desperation from starvation? Part of being an educated hunter is taking clean, steady kill shots. Not using live animals for long range target practice. That's great that you have a hobby your family has enjoyed together but stick to inanimate targets. And like I said, I was only poking fun at what sounds like a major squeeze of the bs horn. 1 Quote going fishing is okay, going catching is great! Mr. Canoehead 69 Report post Posted November 4, 2014 Ive met a few who must have poor distance perception because they talk about taking down game at 300 yards but when you get them to the range they cant even hit the paper at 200 yards without a bench rest. Gone8to1248 158 Report post Posted November 4, 2014 Why is it so hard for people to believe that someone dropped a deer at 400 yards. What would you say to the person who killed a man at 2,707 yards. I wouldn't what to be the one to call him a BS-er! Just because maybe you and I can't do it doesn't mean he couldn't have done it.
SherpaJ 45 Report post Posted November 4, 2014 I'm certainly no long range specialist, but I have practiced at up to 600 yards with my 30-06 Tikka ( and Leupold with custom ballistic turrets) and it is completely possible to take game up to that range with it if I wanted, but where in NWO do we find those kind of opportunities? 200 yards has been the furthest I've used my Tikka on an animal. If we were out in Western Canada I know for a fact that the general opinion people are sharing would be far different. I know and have shot with many friends (all from out west) who own rifles (most are custom-built in .308 to .338 Lapua) for 500-1300 yard shots. Shooting game at that distance is precarious I will agree. Only those who truly know what they're doing and have all the right equipment can pull it off.I'm not necessarily trying to defend anybody, but I don't think anybody should be judging something they don't understand or simply can't do. A decent quality 30-06 and good (not great) shooter can easily take a moose or deer at 400 yards. And with a 300 win mag, sure you can hit "objects" out at 600 yards easily enough. Cripe, Some of my friends practice with their 300 win mags on gongs at 1300 yards. It all takes a lot practice and the right stuff. BirchPoint2014, I would love to see some pics of your 300 win mag. What are you using for a stock, action, trigger, barrel? I also am going to assume you hand load as well. What powder and how much you use? Bullets? BirchPoint2014 17 Report post Posted November 5, 2014 SherpaJ, the 300 win mag i use is a early 1980s sako finnbear, it's a wooden stock, bolt action, floating barrel, everything on the gun is original no modifications done, as the rifle was handle down to me from my father, i'm not that in to handling my own loads, i only use hornaby rounds 180gr, it was an kassnar 8x18 40mm tactical scope which has never let me down, i will snap some pictures this evening and send them to you Quote BirchPoint2014 CEO & COO of Birch Point Resort Kashabowie, ON
Cribby 22 Report post Posted November 19, 2014 Stud Muffin, a range finder should be in your budget this year. A 600 yrd shot without extensive training and a spotter seems unlikely. If you did it then all the power to you, but I have gone out with people that claimed similar feates. And when I bring my range finder, they can never duplicate that shot in front of anyone. LOL, sorry had to add that. Determining distance is a very hard thing to judge. Especially from 250yrds and on. And for hunting rifles a 30-06 with the appropriate bullet weight is a great caliber. I have a 270 win and have a lot of trouble if in the bush with it. I think if hunting hydo lines and open areas its great, but 30-06 is a good option because of the different Grain bullets you can get. from 130-220 I believe. wear as the 270 maxes at 160gr, I have had great success with mine and its the straightest shooting rifle I have no matter the bullet in it or load in the shell. Just my opinion

Cribby 22 Report post Posted November 20, 2014 Sorry stud muffin, it was just the thought of a person saying a 600 is easy Is on something, and I misread. Like I said with an everyday hunter making those shots is incredible and in most hunters eyes unethical I'm sure. I apologize.
