NW Ontario Hatches

Recommended Posts

So I'm determined to get out river/stream fishing a lot more this summer (aside from the annual steelhead and salmon runs) for brookies and am curious of the hatches that happen in the Thunder Bay area.  I've been fortunate enough to do some fishing out west and have a bit of knowledge of their hatches, but am a unsure of local ones.  I know of the mayfly hatch that occurs, but do we also get a hatch of BWOs, PMDs and caddis??  I would venture and assume the "usual suspects" could be around.  I will carry the typical dry flies in the box (parachute adams, elk hair caddis, stimulators, BWOs, PMDs).  Do i have the right idea, are there any others i am missing??  I tried searching for an entomology report/insect hatch chart for the area but came up empty handed.

Thanks again,

I've run across caddis and lots of stonefly hatches around the streams here. Heard the nipigon river gets a big hatch of huge salmon flies during the summer haven't witnessed that myself yet.
