Black Bay Ice Conditions, 2017/18

Recommended Posts

AB

Just a heads up for the guys heading out onto Black Bay out of the Hurkett landing.......

There is no marked trail out to Granite this year, no bridges over the ice ridges yet either.

We've had a couple of days when the ground wind really whips up the snow and visibility drops to less than 100 meters. The ski doo trails are quickly blown over and can become very confusing, especially in the dark.  Having a compass or GPS can come in really handy to find your way back in.

Once you get out past 5 mile, there are some wonderful ice minefields to contend with. When the bay froze, broke up and re-froze it set up a couple areas where there are pieces of 4 to 6 inch thick ice sticking up. Many are now incorporated into snow drifts. Some are a few inches in height, others are almost 2 ft.

If you hit one of the bigger ones at high speed its not going to be pleasant. Even the small ones can dump a sleigh being towed behind a snow machine or quad. (found that out the hard way today). It only lasts for about 2 1/2 miles so take your time and don't bust up your gear.

Fishing is good.  All areas where Gary has his huts are producing. The fish seem to be schooling up a little more than in December and the action can keep you pretty busy at times.

Cabin fever reliever weather should be here by Sunday, Tight lines everyone!

Any huts by Granite? I am looking at making the run this weekend.

i have one hut out at granite but as ab stated its a little ruff in areas getting out there i will not be taking the shuttle out that far until we get more snow to smoothen the trail so if anyone wants to rent the hut out at granite bring your own sleds

Can anyone offer updates on recent conditions such as snow, slush,  ridges and trial markers?

Looks like it's supposed to be a mild weekend and I'd like to get my 8yr old out.

Thanks.

Went out with Gary Hamilton  yesterday and the shacks aren't out at granite. He  says the ridge is too much trouble. So if you rent a shack I would suggest you plan to move around and go up to granite for a bit. Got 4  all day but I heard people were doing a lot better by granite.

I was out at Granite Island yester day. Fishing was pretty good.

Jig and minnow seemed to be just getting smaller fish, 10 inches and under. Pretty much had to marry the jig and minnow about 1-3 inches off the bottom. I tied on a white jigging rap and started jigging 3-5 feet off the bottom and got some bigger perch. biggest was 14 inches a few 13 inchers and a bunch of 11 and 12 inch perch.

Gary also brought one more shack out there. I kinda remember that he might be bringing more shacks there but I'm just some old guy and I might of heard him wrong but he'll confirm or correct me when he sees this.

HAHA!

I didn't measure it but it went past the curls (don't know the proper name for them) on my auger so I'd say over 20 inches anyways......

I also didn't go past the ice ridge. I was thinking about and now that I think about it I was thinking that I should have.

According to Google the curl is called a spiral.

When I went out I crossed it and it looked good from my side then I went over and it was a little bit of a straight down drop!

When I left I followed AB and Gary back and they marked a trail all the way out to Granite and cut through an ice ridge for the trail. Follow the markers and there is a nice little pass through the ice ridge now.

Gary and AB work very hard out there to make access as in marking trails and cutting through ice ridges. So give these guys a wave when ya see them!

We did ok but not any big ones. They were all 6-10 inches long. We had a great time and yes we saw the guys busting their butts out there working. Hats off to ya!

I just got back from fishing the bay, wasn't really paying attention but its 2 feet for sure, maybe alittle more and its solid ice.  Enough people out there I'm sure someone will let you use theirs for a couple of holes.

Taking my 8yr old out tomorrow.  She's got a PD day so I booked a vacation day.

Temps should be mild and hoping for a repeat of last weekend.

At least the fish catching part....

Loading up after a good day on the ice we forgot some mitts and a hat on the tail gate of my truck.

Some how the mitts survived the entire trip back to town, but if anyone finds a wine coloured Carhartt touque, please let me know.

Thanks.

I am coming up to fish with Gary in a little over a month and I have a couple questions.

1. Is it legal to use perch eyes from the fish I catch on the lake as bait?   I read the Ontario regs and didn't see any restrictions but wanted to confirm.   I am from the states and many states prohibit it.

2. Does the Navionics phone app have a detailed map of the bay and is it accurate?   I prefer to use Lakemaster chips in the states because I have found Navionics to be off and/or inaccurate.  I am trying to decide if I should purchase the Canada Navionics app or if I should purchase the Great Lakes or Ontario Lakemaster chip.

3. How often do you catch non-perch species while fishing perch?   Is it worth bringing gear to target big pike, steelhead, etc.?   I am aware targeting walleye is prohibited and all must be immediately released.

Thanks

You’re right, the Ontario fishing regulations restrict the use of live fish as bait to only listed baitfish species. That does not include live perch. AS far as the Perch eyes go - yes you can, with some exceptions. The Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act prohibits the wastage of fish flesh which is suitable for human consumption (by the person who has taken the fish). So, in general terms, a person may use the “parts” of fish (tails, fins, skin, eyes, etc.) as bait, but anglers should not use entire fish they have harvested, other than baitfish, as bait. If you buy fish from a commercial fisher or someone else who can legally sell yellow perch; the “flesh wastage” provision does not apply to fish that have been purchased. Make sure you keep the receipt.
