Some Old Guy

Black Bay Ice Conditions, 2017/18

Recommended Posts

Just a heads up for the guys heading out onto Black Bay out of the Hurkett landing.......

There is no marked trail out to Granite this year, no bridges over the ice ridges yet either.

We've had a couple of days when the ground wind really whips up the snow and visibility drops to less than 100 meters. The ski doo trails are quickly blown over and can become very confusing, especially in the dark.  Having a compass or GPS can come in really handy to find your way back in.

Once you get out past 5 mile, there are some wonderful ice minefields to contend with. When the bay froze, broke up and re-froze it set up a couple areas where there are pieces of 4 to 6 inch thick ice sticking up. Many are now incorporated into snow drifts. Some are a few inches in height, others are almost 2 ft.

If you hit one of the bigger ones at high speed its not going to be pleasant. Even the small ones can dump a sleigh being towed behind a snow machine or quad. (found that out the hard way today). It only lasts for about 2 1/2 miles so take your time and don't bust up your gear.

Fishing is good.  All areas where Gary has his huts are producing. The fish seem to be schooling up a little more than in December and the action can keep you pretty busy at times.

Cabin fever reliever weather should be here by Sunday, Tight lines everyone!

Any huts by Granite? I am looking at making the run this weekend.

i have one hut out at granite but as ab stated its a little ruff in areas getting out there i will not be taking the shuttle out that far until we get more snow to smoothen the trail so if anyone wants to rent the hut out at granite bring your own sleds

Can anyone offer updates on recent conditions such as snow, slush,  ridges and trial markers?

Looks like it's supposed to be a mild weekend and I'd like to get my 8yr old out.

Thanks.

Since we can not call female anglers "fisherman" We should just call 'em hookers.....
