Icemanship - How to judge ice

Recommended Posts

The video is in from Sweden but very easy to follow and understand. This may save your life!

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming - WOW - what a ride!!!

An even wiser rule of thumb. If you need an ice ⛏pick to check thickness...stay the hell off 💦🐳

Video is about backcountry skating, which you really can only regularly do early in the year when the ice is thin and there hasn't been snow yet.  When it's good, it's probably about the closest you can get to feeling like you are flying without leaving the ground.  I'm pretty sure these guys know the risk they are taking and are trying to be as safe as they can

I tend to agree. However there are anglers who push the limits throughout the season. Those who risk going for a swim when venturing out on thin ice or near open water no matter which species they are targeting. Hopefully this video will help them evaluate ice, the risk involved and return home safe and sound.

I must confess I've done my share of venturing onto "fresh" ice;  just a bit less now though, as the years go by.      😉
