Fred 30 Report post Posted December 22, 2017 I have been trying mediums, large and sucker minnows. I have got fish on all of them. I hook mine through the back just at the fin. I'm about 50/50 with hook sets. How do you guys hook your minnows for better hook ups? Thanks.
levi64 72 Report post Posted December 22, 2017 I've tried them all different ways, I always come back hooking them along he back right beside the fin, like you its about 50/50 but I find its the best spot for a good bite and hookset, the minnow also lives a long time and can move around well. I like this for dead sticking and it works for me. I find with perch it doesn't matter if the minnow is dead or not so i usually hook them right through the head, sometimes only use half and still catch perch. Red_Nuck 5 Report post Posted December 23, 2017 The best success I've found is by using a small bait holder hook and going in just behind the dorsal fin, staying just under the skin, and coming out at the front of the dorsal fin. Minnows seem very lively and I figure more fish are hooked due to location and direction of hook. Been testing this way against small treble hooks and have found more hits (less visible perhaps) and more hook sets per hit with the single hook (especially with specks). Cheers! Thefishleclair 175 Report post Posted December 23, 2017 Right behind the head in the meaty part. Minnow swims better and hookups are better. Quote Grumpas' Baits Check it out on FB
