Whitefish through the ice

Recommended Posts

klatown

Hi all, I'm going to be trying to catch whitefish through the ice for the first time this year. I've ice fished before but never for whitefish, just wondering about what baits and stuff that y'all use.

I like smaller spoons such as Hopkins, Swedish Pimples and Rattle Snakie.

Small hammered gold pimple tipped with meat (minnow head/tail, waxie, etc.) and a small octopus hook 1' above the pimple tipped with meat. Deadly!!!

For whitefish, it's location, location, location...bring electronics and be prepared to drill a lot of holes.

For water depth, 6 to 50 feet will do. Whities are generally within 6 feet of the bottom so cover that jigging zone and after 20 minutes, if nothing shows up, move on. Once you find a hole that produces fish, then you can refine your presentation.

A 1/4 or 3/8oz Rattle Snakie is all I ever use, straight metal no meat.

Whitefish have terrible aim when it comes to actually getting the lure in their mouth, often approaching multiple times and missing. If you sting a fish hard it won't be back....but others will be along so give the location another 1/2 hour before moving on.

If you find the right spot, it can be chaos!

Good luck!

Blue white or blue silver jigging spoons tipped with minnow heads, jig aggressively don’t be afraid to reel it up and make them chase the bait . A number 8 treble hook works best and I prefer a tingler spoon.

Good luck
