9ft or 10ft 5wt???

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I'm looking for some insight/opinions on a new fly rod.  Looking at either a 9ft or 10ft 5wt mainly for dry fly fishing.  I realize the 9ft 5wt is the standard go-to dry fly setup, but the versatility of a 10ft has caught my eye.  The 10ft'er will help keep the line off the water and allows for some nymphing, dry fly, and streamer fishing from what I've read.  I am considering the Moonshine Rod Co 9ft or 10ft 5wt Drifter model.  Any pros/cons to each would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Adam

I would probably go for the 10 footer,so you could use it for steelhead also.

Any 5wt fly rod is really light for steelhead fishing on the north shore.

I've used them in the past and only in really low water conditions that limit the ability of the fish to hop into a strong current and make a long down stream dash. I don't want to exhaust the fish bringing it to hand.

As for the dry fly aspect, a 10ft rod will give you a few more inches for line control. I guess the question is where do you plan to use it?  In some tight places, the length might actually give you more problems than a shorter rod.

My preference is longer, for open spaces and small fish. I like a shorter, faster action rod with plenty of back bone for dealing with bigger fish that occasionally surprise me no matter the size body of water.

Either rod you choose is gonna be fun to fish with!
