Big Pike

According to the current issue of Esox Angler which I just received yesterday, here is the story behind the huge pike photo posted on this site a couple weeks ago. "The fish was caught in March 2006 in Holland by Ewout Blom. It had a length of 127 cm (50") and a weight of 10.6 kilos (43 lbs.)"

The In-Fisherman handbook (1998) on pike lists one caught in Ireland, who knows when, weighing 96 lbs., with numerous others in the 90 lb. range from the early 1800s. The biggest they list for Canada was a 49 lb.er from Lake Tschotagama in 1890. The biggest from the US was a 46 lb. 2 oz. pike from Sacandaga Reservoir in NY in 1940. The Ontario record is 42 lbs. 2 oz. from 1946 and the MN record is 45 lbs. 12 oz. from 1929.

According to some of the commercial fishermen in Beardmore, back in the mid-90's a 72lb pike was netted by fishermen from Gull Bay FN on the west side of Lake Nipigon.
