Seven men from the Cochrane area were convicted of 18 offences and fined a total of $17,750 for moose poaching.

The seven men pleaded guilty to numerous offences under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act related to poaching moose off the Abitibi River in Glackmeyer Township, on the outskirts of the Town of Cochrane.

Maxime Genier, of Kapuskasing, pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawfully hunting moose without the authority of a licence. He received a $2,625 fine and a four-year hunting suspension.

Martin D.L. Smith, of Hamilton, pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawfully hunting moose without the authority of a licence. He received a $2,625 fine, and forfeited his rifle to the Crown. Smith has never had a hunting licence and will be prohibited from hunting for four years.

Patrick Genier, of Novar, pleaded guilty to one count of unlawfully hunting moose without the authority of a licence and was fined $1,125. Genier also received a four-year hunting suspension and had his rifle forfeited to the Crown.

Laureal Genier, of Kapuskasing, pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing illegally killed animals, one count of spoilage, two counts of obstructing a conservation officer and one count of knowingly making a false statement. Maurice Genier, of Kapuskasing, pleaded guilty to one count of possessing illegally killed animals, one count of obstructing a conservation officer and one count of knowingly making a false statement. He was ordered to pay $2,625 in fines and received a four-year hunting suspension.

Darrell W. Smith, of Hamilton, pleaded guilty to one count of obstructing a conservation officer and two counts of knowingly making a false statement. He was fined $2,625 and had his hunting licence suspended for four years.

All moose meat seized during the investigation was forfeited to the Crown and donated to charity.

The court heard that on October 11, 2007, Martin Smith, Maxime Genier and Patrick Genier shot and killed a cow and bull moose without the proper licences. Maurice Genier and Laureal Genier subsequently took possession of the moose.

Darrel Smith, Maurice Genier and Laureal Genier made efforts to conceal the illegal killing of the moose and hinder and obstruct the investigation by the conservation officers. These included making false statements, affixing copies of First Nation status cards to the moose and tampering with a gun. The bull moose was left in the possession of Laureal Genier who allowed it to spoil save for one hind quarter. The moose was not suitable for human consumption.

More than 14 officers from six different Ministry of Natural Resources districts were involved in the investigation.

Justice of the Peace Dolores Boyuk heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, in Cochrane, on December 17, 2009.

Earlier, on June 11, 2009, Laurent Genier, of Cochrane, pleaded guilty to a charge of obstructing a conservation officer and was fined $500 by Justice of the Peace Dolores Boyuk in the Ontario Court of Justice, Cochrane.
