Loaded Firearm In Vehicle Leads To Jail Time

Some Old Guy

A Geraldton man has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for having a loaded firearm in a vehicle and failing to pay $4,000 in fines from previous safety-related wildlife convictions.

Peter Atlookan Jr. was convicted under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act. His firearm was forfeited to the Crown.

Court heard that on October 12, 2009, a conservation officer stopped the vehicle Atlookan was driving on Storm Road, 20 km north of Nakina. The officer found a loaded firearm behind Atlookan’s feet.

Justice of the Peace John Guthrie heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice in Geraldton on March 23, 2010.

The ministry reminds hunters that it is illegal to possess a loaded firearm in a vehicle or vessel, including aircraft, snowmobile, ATV or motorboat. It is also hazardous and has led to injuries and fatalities.

To report a natural resources violation, call 1-877-TIPS-MNR (847-7667) toll-free any time or contact your local ministry officer during regular business hours. You can also call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477)
