Shooting At Moose Decoy From A Motorboat Proves Costly

Recommended Posts

Two southern Ontario men have been fined $2,000 after pleading guilty to shooting at a moose decoy from a motorboat.

David J. Cooper and Douglas J. Cooper, both of Dunnville, were fined $1,000 each. David Cooper also received a one-year hunting licence suspension.

The court heard that on October 9, 2010, Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officers from the Wawa District set up a moose decoy on Whiteberry Creek near Oba Lake. David Cooper fired one shot at the moose decoy from the bow of the motorboat with a high-powered rifle while Douglas Cooper operated the boat. Douglas Cooper then fired another shot from the motorboat. Both men were arrested, had their firearms seized and were subsequently charged. The conservation officers had set up the decoy in response to public complaints of hunters shooting from boats in the area.

Justice of the Peace Jean-Marie Blier heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Wawa, on November 18, 2010.

The ministry reminds the public that it is illegal to discharge a firearm from a motorboat and that laws regarding the use of firearms are in place for the protection and safety of hunters and members of the public.

To report a natural resource violation, call 1-877-TIPS-MNR (847-7667) toll free any time or contact your local ministry office during regular business hours. You can also call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
