i was checking some of the rivers about an hour ago and by the mouth of the current river in the first open spot closest to the mouth you can see every so often a quick flash of siler come out from under the ice. GOOD signs to see. hope this snow falling turns into a good rain to break things up more. tried to go see if the other side had any openings closer to the grain elevators but ther were cops there i believe escorting some guys playing in the mud down there so i stayed away since my truck is muddy and didnt want to get involved LOL

Just outside of town it's freakin' snowing out. Has been all day. What's it like in town? We need rain not snow!

Hmmm, I wonder if those flashes of silver are fish? Is there enough room for a backcast to fire a few raps around out there? Maybe just fire a rap onto the ice...then pull it off the edge and give it a few pulls. That would do the trick I bet.

I hear stealies love raps!

Meant steelies rog. Like "steelhead". They spawn in the rivers in the spring. You can catch them on raps. Btw are we going pickerel fishing this year or what? They open may long!

when i was young, i chased them threw the ice flows too. now with a little grey hair, i have learned to relax, let the rivers open up, let the fish come, and not burn myself out before the run starts. relax guys and let mother nature take its course.

Are you allowed to fish on the ice right in front of current river??

giver! just tie a rope to yourself, and a tree, then wear a life jacket. Leave your vehicle running so its warm so you can warm up after you pull yourself out of the river with your rope.

**IM BEING SARCASTIC!!** VENTURING OUT ON TO ICE ON A RUNNING RIVER IS LIKE RUSSIAN ROULETTE!! JUST PLAIN STUPID!

Since the rivers aren't fishable and you guys are all excited about steelhead, maybe you should check out the following:

The Ministry of Natural Resources and North Shore Steelhead Association are co-hosting a workshop to show recreational anglers how to gather information from adult rainbow trout they catch.

o Thursday, April 7, 2011

o 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

o Valhalla Inn, Viking Room, Thunder Bay

o Hosted by the Ministry of Natural Resources and North Shore Steelhead Association

The workshop is part of the Cooperative Rainbow Trout Angler Program. This program organizes the collection of biological information from adult rainbow trout, such as scale samples, caught by recreational anglers during the annual spring spawning period, which runs from April to June in the tributaries of Lake Superior's north shore.

This workshop teaches recreational anglers the proper techniques for gathering samples and handling fish. The information gathered by anglers provides valuable life history information on the species that can be used to assess the status and health of the rainbow trout fishery.

Ministry staff will provide presentations on the origin and benefits of the Cooperative Rainbow Trout Angler Program, fish sampling protocol and proper fish handling techniques.

Anglers who sign up for the program will receive a sampling kit and fishing line.

Admission is free. Attendees will have the option to purchase a membership to the North Shore Steelhead Association for $10.

This project is funded by the Community Fisheries and Wildlife Involvement Program.

LOL hahah i hear ya...i've spent many hours on thin ice nailing some bows, and i've still got that young dumb blood flowwing in me..hope i never lose it haha! was out on one this afternoon...no luck but there is not much water moving yet, so the fish are not stacked like they should be. thinking current river mouth might be worth a try....that is if the ice holds up a little longer!

There is a sign in my favorite bait shop that reads. Your only young once, but you can be immature forever. Giver the ice is still good for awhile yet.

Haven't been to too many spelling bees or grammar classes but I'm fairly sure you meant "they're", there ;) . I'm just sayin' since the topic was open.
