New to TBay - Looking for ice fishing locations

Recommended Posts

Guest Fowkes

Hi all,

Just moved to Thunder Bay last week. Once everything gets unpacked I hope to get out on the ice. Any suggestions on local lakes, or areas of Superior would be great. Mostly it'll be just me, but sometimes I'll have my young son along so suggestions that don't involve a long drive or a quad/sled would also be appreciated. Thanks.

Great website.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming - WOW - what a ride!!!

Whitefish has been good to me over the years. Not a bad drive and walk out anywere. I dont have a quad or sled so i either drive out or walk.

common choices are

  • whitefish lake- walk on 1 hr drive
  • lac des mill lacs (referred to as just "lac")
    - pine point easy walk on for fish has cabins for rent - 2 hours
-sawmill bay has an ice road but this year it has been not easy to travel-1.5 hours archies sugar shacks can hook you up with a shack
  • Black bay, sled on but hamilton baits may rent a snowmobile or give a lift and provide a hut
  • little trout bay- walk on but deeper water and lakers are closed right now
  • many stock lakes you can drive to and walk on go buy the stocked lakes book from D&R to get maps

and of course see gary at rockwood for bait !!

I watched Gary transport out at least 3 shuttle loads of people last Saturday and must say that's a tidy operation he's running. One hell of a sled also that transports 9 people on the toboggan, b-training the firewood toboggan, while doubling up another rider on the sled. Impressive!
