So is there any rule about river conditions? I don't see that in there anywhere. I honestly don't see the difference of asking someone the ice condition on lac or the river condition at wolf. Still won't catch the fish for you. You know the more I think about this the more it perplexes me. How do trout rate but nothing else?

And all you smokers out there... keep your f**king buts in your cig pack!!! You smokers don't think it's a big deal to toss your butts on the ground, but it annoys the hell out of us non-smokers to see them laying everywhere, go ahead and polute your body but keep it out of the rivers/lakes/shorelines... thx.

Hi all, Well, here we are in 2011. How can I tell that spring is here? How can I tell that the rivers are freeing themselves of thier glossy frozen coat of ice? How can I tell there are those chromy shiny fish (not smelts) making thier spring migration to their spawning grounds? Well I would like to take the time to remind everyone of a rule that the board has. I know you read it when you signed up...... Here it is, • Posting of specific trout spots. (Brook and Steelhead) Thunder Bay Fishing does not allow the posting of exact locations for these species anymore. Users may ask for trout spots but the only answer they will get is through a pm from a user who wants to give up a spot. No more posting these specific spots on the forum for everyone to see. If you want specifics on steelhead spots, email one of the contacts at the North Shore Steelhead Association. Hopefully they may be able to help you out. Now I have been on the phone discussing what "specific spots" mean. Does it mean a location on a river or stream or does it mean the river or stream itself? I will make that judgement after a little more deliberation. Oh, and that rule was not just implemented it's been there for years. Roger

To those that are interested in fishing a tournament for the first time or just getting into one of the 1st tournaments of the year this one is for you! It's a one day event. All the chips are on the table that day. There's no day 2 to try and make up ground. You gotta bring your best to the table that day! Meaning, everyone is pretty much on a level playing field. This is one tournament that you can win even if you have never fished the lake or even prefished it before! Anyways here's the link: Frazer Lake Walleye Classic. See you there! Roger

Well Chuck the difference is The fish in the BIG lake are not stocked. In our neck of the woods anyway. So yes they are special. We have the only (I may be wrong about ONLY but one of very few at least) naturally reproducing self sustaining population in all the great lakes. Everywhere else they are stocked. By self sustaining I don't mean an over abundance, all I am saying they won't go extinct (barring any environmental disaster). Scaremongers? Come on man, seriously? You can't prove anything by comparing the inland put and take trout to the north shore Steelhead. Apples and oranges my friend. The people saying the numbers are down are the people doing the research. As well as the anglers who have been at it for years. Ask anyone in the know and they'll say "It's not like it use to be." Even I can remember going to the Mackenzie and have a chance at banking 25 Steelhead in an afternoon. Now you would have to be pretty damn good to get double digits. Same goes for the Wolf. So please, before your start spewing at least get half a clue. When you post your photos, keep your fingers out of the gills as well, unless your taking it home.

This morning the 70th team registered for this year's SSS. A waiting list will now begin to be compiled. Usually there are a couple of teams that pull out for one reason or another, so don't be shy, be the first to get on that waiting list.

I really don't see the big deal in telling someone the river condition. Its no different then asking for the ice condition at lac. Hell people even say how they did there. Honestly if you think thats going to put a steelhead on their rod then you shouldn't call yourself a stealheader. Its really not that simple.

If I were you Steve P.....I would wait for the final 2 weeks of your time off !Give the Lake a little time to warm up,that way you can target more the one species !Definitely check with The Nipigon branch of the MNR as they like to change regs on the fly all year long !!!! PM me if you want I live in Nipigon ! Seppi

good advice as i am a smoker it does make me feel bad when i am standing in the river and butts are floating down past me. i myself keep mine in my pocket or even a little baggy and bring them out with me. it was taught and ground in when i worked in the forestry industry and still to this day not leave em in the bush or streams. and to add one more thing tonite while down at the river it disgusted me when i made my way to a spot i frequent and found that someone had decided to re-spool there reel and left the old line behind. if you have a bunch of trash from your day or evening of fishing and dont feel like bringing it home look out for the black and silver old dakota and at least put it in the garbage bag i keep in the box. if you do see it it is over half full know of garbage i have been picking up while fishing this spring so far.

HAHAHA, this happens every year... If you don't want to tell someone DONT REPLY... if someone else wants to spill the beans, they will... unless Roger put it in the forum rules, or until the MNR puts a law in that says you can't share ice/water/fishing conditions in public... I think it's fair game to talk about it on a public forum Izzy, I'm not a steelhead fisher, so I don't think I qualify for butt probing if I talk about it... so that said, if I drive by in the next few days, I'll post on this public forum and let you know

i am still going up there to watch the ice float down the river and sorry for asking on river conditions i didnt realize that a particular species of fish were so magical that it had to be kept a secret. in fact if anyone wants to go watch the ice with me let me know LOL.

I don't understand how SOMEONE ELSE posting about spots THEY are fishing is ruining YOUR secret sport that YOU have put x number of hours into finding over the last 20 years. None of the rivers around town have any secret spots on them. If your spot is so secret and you don't want anyone else ruining it, then don't tell anyone. Go stand there by yourself and have fun. Maybe if the self-aclaimed "diehards" spent more time fishing and less time trolling internet forums, there wouldn't be this issue year in and year out.

It WAS a good river. It's only a matter of time now and the hoards will be all over it. But I bet it was fun while it lasted.

I believe smelt are very temperature driven so just keep an eye on the water temps and you should get a good feel for when they will be around. From what I understand, temps in the 42 to 45 degrees F range are ideal. I've seen them before, during and after the steelhead run so you cant really use that as a guideline.

The only way the Championship will wind up in Greenstone is if FlyGal and myself drive through it on the way home!

Ah yes the MIB with the little guns lol.. Ah my favorite time of year. Don't tell anyone about ice on a major river crossing the trans Canada Highway make the poor guy spent the gas money to drive out there and see for himself then he will be as twisted as some of the other so called Mr. Steelhead fishermen. Good reply Chuck hope the MIB don't visit you for letting people know about the secret Nipigon river and the ice conditions.

Yes, I agree, good reply. I can't believe some people on this forum. The privleged steelhead community and their top secret information. Yada yada whatever. This is a fishing forum where people come to get/give information so get over it. End rant.
