Well I want to catch a longnose because I am trying to catch every species of fish in Ontario, and I haven't caught a longnose yet. (just the ones that can be caught on a rod and reel, I cannot see myself trying to catch any minnows, although there are people who fish for minnows). I do this because I love fish biology and really enjoy researching the different types of fish, their life histories and identifying them. It also provides a fun challenge to try and catch new things and explore new fishing locations. This all started when I destroyed my shoulder and couldn't play sports anymore. So, I needed a new hobby, and I really liked fishing. My dad always told stories about a weird "dogfish" he caught as a kid, and I wanted to see what they look like. So I researched them, found a few spots around my house where they could be found, what people catch them on etc. Then I went to try and catch one and it was a blast! So, I expanded that to other species like carp, catfish, bass. Now the longnose sucker is the fish I haven't caught at this time of year, and they are not anywhere around my house back home, so this is the best shot I have at catching one. As for why would you want to catch suckers in general, they are abundant, easy to catch, put up a decent fight, and taste pretty good (bones are a little annoying). I don't tend to keep many of them. I only end up keeping the smaller ones because I deep fry them to remove the bones, but the bones in larger ones don't crisp up as well. Apparently you can also pickle or can suckers, but I don't have the fancy equipment to try stuff like that. Anyway, hope this is a good response, feel free to think I'm crazy. This is something I find fun, and I will keep doing it so long as it stays fun.

Just got boat back from Wawa yesterday. If weather holds true I'll be going out. I would like to wish everyone good luck fishing salmon this year. Hope there is some nice catches. In fact I wish all success no matter what fish you all choose to go after. Please post any pic of salmon catches. Love to see them. Good luck all. Terry

I run a discontinued Hummingbird unit that looks very similar to the Humminbird PiranhaMAX . I purchased from a guy selling off Craig's List for $35 including transducer. Don't know how important water temp is because all the units I've ever seen, just measured surface temp and if you ever jump into that lake - you know surface temp means nothing compared to the water temp 6 feet beneath the surface or even 2 feet for that matter. I have found that inexpensive Hummingbird to read depth as accurately up to 30 feet (deepest I've tested) as a $1200 Lowrance GPS unit, so I wouldn't place any stock into the rumors that it's inaccurate in "shadow waters". Proper transducer installation is a must. I find a sonar unit to be useful to me in the areas of depth and bottom structure - I've fished in boats with high dollar units and seeing bait fish with other larger fish in tow at 25/30 feet and not being able to get a bite after trying a dozen different "presentations" gets real frustrating at times. Unless you feel the need for all the bells & whistles, an inexpensive unit will tell you the depth and the fish will tell you if their on the bite and once that is established, that sonar unit will greatly assist in keeping you in that depth and that's what it's all about in my opinion, which isn't worth much to most.

I used one of the hummingbird piranhas (black and white) think it was about 130-150 on sale if that. Only used it for one weekend three days straight. To read depth and water temp it did just fine. With the 50hp on plane I would loose signal. I know I didn't have it set right at the perfect angle to the bottom and might have been a tad high as i did it in 10 mins (unit wasn't mine just was given to use for the weekend). I ran it on my marcum battery. Never charged it all weekend. Did the job fine imo

I do a lot of smaller lake fishing with the use of a canoe, and I usually try to do different lakes in which I've never been before. I run a Lowrance Elite 4 mounted in an ice fishing case and I love it. It tells me everything I need to know to find fish.....depth, water temp and it gives me a very good look at what the structure is beneath me. Without it, I would be clueless and probably without fish for most trips, but it does everything I could ask for a low budget fish finder.

Lowrance hook. Use to be called elite.. great units big screens and high resolution. I think they are a great value. I see many 50k+ boats running these units in tournaments. I have owned all except Garmin

I have used eagle, lowrance and humminbird finders and humminbird is my favourite. I find the menus easier to navigate to change settings quickly. I would suggest trying each in store to find out which one you prefer as most entry level units have similar specs and features.

I don't think I'm going to get tapped for Sandro's eulogy, but I will tell you this about the man. In all the years I had known him, he asked extremely little from me, yet he gave me so much. At one point I told him I was looking for tournament sponsorship, and he said, "no Pancho, I'll take care of you." All he ever wanted from me is to spend a little time with me. Be it in a boat every so often, or a quick lunch, or some time in his rec-room with the always-in-stock beer shoved my way. Always smiling and laughing and a good bit of mutual teasing as friends do. He was always welcoming and happy to see me no matter where he was or what he was doing. And that's the biggest thing. I'll miss him greatly. -Tom
