Some Old Guy 968 Report post Posted May 17, 2007 Q. I'm a logger and I'm wondering if there is a way to check the fire code in the area like Upsala for instance without use the one you phone? I was wondering if there is a site on-line. And what is the phone number to get the codes? We were shutdown Thursday because the foreman said the code was 4 in the area I work. Thanks A. To get the answer to this question, I contacted our fire organization in Dryden. For those people reading who are not in the forest industry, here's a brief background of the "Woods Modification Guidelines" and what it means to persons working in the bush. The Forest Industy and Woods Modification Guidelines To reduce the occurrence of forest fires resulting from forest industry operations, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR) in consultation with the forest industry has developed guidelines to modify operations in response to fire danger. Guidelines for Modifying Forest Operation in Response to Fire Danger, or Woods Mods as they are commonly referred to, provide incremental prevention measures as the ignition potential and number of fire-starts increase. The intent of these guidelines is to allow companies who invest in fire prevention and preparedness to operate longer during periods of higher fire hazards. To determine the fire hazard, knowledge of past, present and predicted weather behaviour is required. OMNR Weather Technicians provide detailed weather forecasts, and twice daily weather data is received from a network of 85 weather stations across Northwestern Ontario. Fire Intelligence Technicians, with the assistance of sophisticated computer software, crunch the numbers and come up with a forest fire hazard rating for each weather station in the province. Once the fire hazard status has been determined, one of three levels of fire prevention restrictions is imposed on the forest industry. The three levels of fire prevention restrictions are as follows: Invoke Prevention Measures This introductory restriction level kindles the cautionary process where staff are to be made aware of the increasing fire hazard and all fire related concerns and equipment are checked and readily available on a daily basis. Short Shift This restriction level restricts forest operations during the peak burning period of the day (normally between 1200 to 1800 hours depending on the time of year). During this time the forest is dry and receptive to wildfire starts. Under this level of restriction all staff are informed of the explosive state of the forest. After work has been stopped, staff conduct fire patrols of the area. Shutdown This prevention level restricts all forest operations from working for a 24 hour period. This restriction is imposed when conditions are such that no one can control fire spread should a fire erupt. Forest fire fighting resources may also be stretched thin and any new fire starts could become a serious problem. There are also dedicated fire patrols during the shutdown period.
