so it will be the same as the canada games complex a one time deal and then run a deficit after the the big hoopla.don't get me wrong i'm not against this but don't make it sound like the be all end all to t.bays woes.

i heard that the water front is going to be big on the arts.personally i think the casino should go there along with a hotel and add what ever you want to that, the waterfront should be an attraction for everybody not just the arts or the skateboarders. really when you think of it this city sucks when it comes to this sort of stuff.if a buissness wants to come to town look what they have to go through, city council, already established

buissnesses and then there's the public with," yea we need it but not in my back yard".why do you think we don't have a cossco or red lobster?these are two examples of the control people have.if it's not a local big time contactor building it or a lawyer running it or a media owner owning it then we probably won't get it.

my opinion

crisop,

That is a totally unfair and uncalled for statement. I have been involved in the local skateboarding scene for years now and let me tell you, for the most part, these kids are clean cut, hard working and dedicated to their sport. 99% of them don't smoke, drink or do drugs. When there are general public around for competitions, they even keep the foul language to a minimum. Many use their own money from summer jobs to help the local club buy materials for ramps and to use towards fund raising for the new park. One father of two sons who skate (he also skates) took his holidays from work this summer and spent the entire time at the Current River Skate Park helping to build a new half-pipe. (which he also paid for!) He, his sons, my son and many others spent an entire week from dawn till dusk constructing this pipe, all as purely volunteers. The fund raising committee consists of kids as young as 13, their parents and individuals from all walks of life. This group of VOLUNTEERS has raised $550,000 on their own accord, which is huge compared to the city's contribution of $150,000 for a total of $700,000. Now that the park has been delayed until next season, the club is determined to bring the tally up to $1,000,000 or more before ground is broken. How many "punks" do you know that can organize and raise that kind of money for a sport they love? A million dollars!

I don't think I need to point out the fact that a park of this magnitude will keep these kids off of the streets and from damaging property (which no one denies is a problem) not to mention the financial spin offs from visiting skaters and their families.

So in the future, please try not to judge people based on what they do for sport, what kind of clothes they wear or their age. Stereotypes like these cause untold damage to society as we know it. Do a little research before you pass judgment on these kids. Come out to an event and I'm quite sure you will be pleasantly surprised at what you see.

Like the old saying goes, skateboarding is not a crime.

Please note, that I was not involved in the fund raising. I merely have a son and some friends that skate and I also attend competitions and such.
