2014 Moose Hunt

Hey everyone,

Was out this past week and our party was successful in filling our bull tag. My brother and I both arrived at camp on Friday, with our father and a few good friends having been up and set up since Wednesday. Upon our arrival, we asked if there was any early sign in the area we would be hunting, this was met with a story of a mature bull sighting on Thursday morning but nothing else, except for many sets of track hear and there. Opening Morning came with no shots being taken or heard for that matter. arriving back at camp, we found out that someone in our group witnessed a Cow sauntering through the cut but with no visible calf around. We were fortunate to have beautiful weather then entire week except for Monday, with rain for most of the day. We hunted the same area for the first three days of the season with no success and nothing new appearing on the ground. We made the choice to head over to a cut that we have hunted in the past but is now full of new, young Jack Pine trees that are averaging 7-9 ft. We each chose a post in the old cut and I started a calling routine to entice any bulls in the area. Tuesday, Wednesday go by with only movement through the area at night, needless to say we were all starting to feel a little discouraged.........and then Thursday came. As usual we went out to our designated posts, met with beautiful weather again, who could complain. I started the calling routine but once again, no response. After returning to camp, we each reported on what we saw/heard. All members reported nothing new except for my brother, who thought he may have seen the elusive animal we have been after. Most of the day was spent out chicken hunting and pondering over our strategy for the evening hunt. We decided to send 2 of the 5 of us to another cut that is directly across from our old cut, with a creek and small section of bush in between. After parking the bikes and walking to our posts something felt different, one of our group members even mentioned to my brother "make the first shot count" I got to my usual area and waited a few minutes before making my fist call, soft and not very loud I let our the first call in the sequence, waited a few more minutes i let our a second and that when an animal stood up and headed straight through the bush and creek in the direction of the cut where my brother was. No more then a minute later, the first shot goes off, followed by 3 more and silence followed by a loud cheer of excitement and a call over the radio "Bull down!" This was his first moose ever and one that we all believe he will be chasing for the rest of his hunting career with a spread of 62.5".

Thanks for reading, I hope it wasn't to long, It was just such an awesome trip that I wanted to share every aspect.
