Monks 164 Report post Posted April 30, 2015 Not a fly fisherman, tried and hurt myself. Long story... Anyway, I want to start tying my own maribou, bucktail jigs and such mainly for bass and walleye. I am assuming the equipment required would be similar to tying flies? So without breaking the bank, as bass don't need pretty flies like trout What do i need to get started? Guest FreshwaterFisherman Report post Posted April 30, 2015 Vice, bobbin, thread, whip finisher, scissors, materials of choice. You could always expand, but these are the necessities. You could whip finish with your hands. Up to you.
flybum 95 Report post Posted April 30, 2015 ^^^ he hit the nail on the head. Those are the bare minimums for tools, the whip finisher isn't a totally necessity. Maybe some clear nail polish for a gloss finish on he thread or super glue. super glue just isn't as perty!
toma-hawk 44 Report post Posted April 30, 2015 Same as the 2 posts but I would use GSP 100 thread in white and get some sharpies to color the thread to match your material. That way you only need one thread for all your ties.Just a thought. gsambray 172 Report post Posted May 1, 2015 Wouldn't the scent of the sharper be a bad thing
Thefishleclair 175 Report post Posted May 1, 2015 Nope. Head cement smells way stronger. Quote Grumpas' Baits Check it out on FB

Monks 164 Report post Posted May 1, 2015 Cool thanks for the info everyone above. Spent sometime with some steelheaders and watched them a few years back on my first go at steelhead fishing. Waders are now only used for moose hunting... but I enjoyed their dedication to detail.
