Flushing your outboard motor

Recommended Posts

Bobber Down

Just how important is flushing? Well, I recently encountered a problem after letting the motor sit for about a week. When I pulled the boat out of the Kam it was pretty busy at the launch and the water was very churned up and brown/dirty. Never thought much about it. When I returned and launched the boat and fired her up (good thing I noticed) there was nothing coming out of the peephole. OH OH I thought and immediately loaded it back onto the trailer and pulled it out. The peephole was plugged with a dry sand/silty material. I used a piece of wire from a bottom bouncer to poke out all the crud and launched her again. While it was running at the dock there was just small drops of water coming out the peephole so I worked the wire in and out a bit and finally got a good clean stream. Some say flush after every trip. Some never flush. Some flush to help stop the threat of spreading invasive species. I only use this motor on the Kam so now I flush for dirt. Here is a short video showing how to flush in a barrel and using muffs at home and the sound difference.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming - WOW - what a ride!!!

I was late getting pontoon in water this year , fired it up with ear muffs on turned out mud wasps plugged water outlet and it was enough to stop water flow . Next year piece of tape over the outlet . it was fairly deep used a piece of haywire to unplug
