Oh, geez yeah.  They're horrible for the environment.  Big part of the reason that they can't be imported.

I can't say I have noticed any difference in the forest or forest floor where I have picked worms before over the last 30 yrs

They do help aerate in my back yard where the deep layers are hard pan clay though; probably helping rain water absorption.

 

We should probably pick those wild  worms and go fishing to save the planet .
