Thoughts On fold up canoes

Recommended Posts

Fishog

OK so as I am getting older and my hauling in a canoe to my favorite spec lakes is getting hard each year I have been considering getting one of those folding up canoes. Watched a ton of videos but would like some real life pros & cons. There are a lot of them popping up this year. This company is one of several I have been considering.

Give me your thoughts.

Bobber Down

When you get older a lot of things get harder to do LOL. Get a lighter canoe and you will be safer.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming - WOW - what a ride!!!

My old fiber glass canoe is pretty heavy. It was my brothers canoe he donated to me back in the 70's. I did buy one of those strap on wheel carriers and it does make it easier to move around  but is not great for going down trails. I have priced out a new canoe and they can run you $3500-$5500 depending options and sizes.

I like the ones from Swift Canoes.

A guy I know in southern Ontario has one of their models for his float plane, he straps it to the floats to get into small lakes.

I use my fibreglass canoe quite a bit, it’s seen better days I’ve had to rivet cross members back into it, missing front seat and wood for rear seat getting rather dry. I also have a cedar strip but hasn’t seen water in about 40 years. Needs to be sank in a lake filled with rocks so cedar can expand you can see gaps between boards I think last time it was used was on cedar creek second bridge at end strom  road.  Gravel pit now..

Ya in July of 2020 I decided to sand it down and patch the deeper scratches and worn marks, then give it a good coat of marine paint. Its a pretty solid canoe but heavy. I also moved the front seat back a bit to give more room up front for storage. It handles my 1.2 gamefisher outboard pretty good but still would like to retire it and get something newer.
