ghart 55 Report post Posted May 17, 2008 I am looking for opinions, recomendations for a motor for 16 foot aluminium boat. Will a 9.9 hp be enought for the curent in the Nipigon river/Nipigon Bay area? Is a 4 stroke worth the extra cost? Thanx, Glenn Quote In the Age of Information, Ignorance is a Choice. DJL66 5 Report post Posted May 17, 2008 I have been on the Nipigon river with my 16' Alumacraft and a 25 hp Merc and would found it very difficult to get up the river with anything smaller. That current can run very fast at times and can be misleading. With the 25hp all the gear and two guys it made tough work for the engine. 4 strokes are extremely quite with no smoke and easy on gas as well. Hope this helps. crisop 65 Report post Posted May 17, 2008 ya i wouldn't go any smaller than a 25 on the nipigon river. we were on it last yr for salmon and were doing 8mph according to the fish finder and not moving 1 inch forward Quote 2017 Dog Lake Open Champion Line Cutter Fishy AF
Jayfishin 63 Report post Posted May 20, 2008 Spent some time on the river years ago in a twelve foot and 8hp (with Bill 'TBF Warden'). We went down river in his boat and when we tried to turn to come back up at the first narrows we wondered if we would have to just head downstream to Nipigon ...inch by inch we played in the current and eddys then finally made it back up...I'm voting for the 25hp minimum also.
