Guest Paul M. Report post Posted July 17, 2009 Just curious i have heard a bunch of different things about using dead smelt as bait, and I'm not sure what to beleive. Where can someone use dead smelt as bait? I heard only in superior but the last post about smelt seems to say you would be able to use dead smelt anywhere in zone 6. Thanks for any response. Guest MNR Report post Posted July 21, 2009 No where in the province are you allowed to use live smelt as bait. The possession and use of dead smelt as bait is currently prohibited in Fisheries Management Zone (FMZ) 2, 4 and 5. This can be found in the box entitled “Other Zone Regulations” . located in the sections for FMZ 2, 4 and 5 in the 2008-2009 Recreational Fishing Summary. The draft FMZ 6 Fisheries Management Plan proposes a prohibition on using dead smelt as bait for angling in FMZ6, in addition to the province-wide ban on using live smelt as bait that is already in place. This would make the smelt regulation in FMZ 6 the same as for zones that surround FMZ 6.The exception to this is Lake Nipigon. Lake Nipigon is a Specially Designated Water and there is currently a planning process underway to review Lake Nipigon regulations, including bait restrictions. If approved, the prohibition on using dead smelt as bait in FMZ 6 would be implemented in Jan. 2010.
