Castnblast 86 Report post Posted October 20, 2009 Question for anyone who has done it....What's up with netting whitefish? How does it work?
Guest Ityflies Report post Posted October 20, 2009 Question for anyone who has done it....What's up with netting whitefish? How does it work? You can go to the MNR office and get a licence to dip net whitefish, Just like dip netting for smelt but a much bigger fish. Same as smelt at night is better. I have seen others use a ( I think a sceen net ) square net suspended off of a long pole that sits on the bottom and they lift it peroidically to check for fish. Castnblast 86 Report post Posted October 20, 2009 Thanks Ity. Are they right lethargic? I would have thought the fish would be quicker than the dip netter. GE, have you ever done a pc on this? May be an interesting fall topic to profile.
fisherdude 69 Report post Posted October 21, 2009 so in the mouths of creeks and rivers or?
Guest umpoqx Report post Posted October 21, 2009 Rivers and the bouldery shores of Lake Superior. The fish don't actually see the net all the time, night time is best time. They are not lethargic, you can hear them splashing and surfacing in the darkness. Come shallow in numbers, and at random times you dip the net and see if luck is on your side. When Whitefish are running thick you can net quite a few, sometimes more than one because often they will swim in pairs or competing.

Are you sure about the licence??? I understood it that a standard fishing licence allowed an angler to dip net for whitefish in our area from Oct.15 - Nov.15. Domer 103 Report post Posted October 21, 2009 Last I recall a standard fishing licence allows you to use up to 6x6 square net.
uncle 19 Report post Posted October 21, 2009 The way I heard it is you have to have a licence for white fish. Any number of guys can fish on one licence but the licence holder has to be the net man.
