In Ontario, it is illegal to discharge a firearm from, across or down the traveled portion of a maintained road. For most of the rural areas (townships) around Thunder Bay, once you’ve stepped off the traveled portion and crossed the ditch, you’re now into private property. You'll notice that I've emphasized "maintained". Currently there is no definition of what a maintained road is but if you want a general rule of thumb, if the road is named or numbered it will likely be maintained. The Dorion Cutoff Rd. would be an example of what would be considered a maintained road. Even if the road were not classified as maintained, shooting a gun down the road could be considered unsafe (and you could be charged) if something were to happen.

The best way to know if land is private or crown is to pick up a copy of the Crimestopper Explorer Maps.

Camping is permissiable on crown land for a period of 21 days (see other posts regarding crown land camping). After that time, you must move your camping gear (tent, trailer, truck) a minimum of 100 meters. MNR has a real problem with hunters leaving makeshift "camps" behind on crown land.

There is no excuse for littering.

Under the Trespass to Property Act, people must be given notice that entry upon the land or a certain activity on that land is prohibited. Notice can be given either verbally, or in writing or by posting notices at the usual points of entry into the land. A 10 cm red dot on a white background also means “No Trespassing”. Entry is also prohibited even without notice if the land is fenced or under cultivation.
