Salmon studies

Recommended Posts

Guest jackfish pete

I have heard talk of lowering the salmon limit to 3. It sounds good to me, but I would like some more information. Has the MNR done any (or plan to do any) studies on the effects of a lesser salmon harvest? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

There is no proposal to reduce the salmon quota at this time, and there have been no formal requests by any citizens group for such a reduction. Any such proposal would first have to go through a public consultation process with the FMZ 9 Advisory Council.

Salmon are difficult to study because they tend to be suspended in open lake water, making them hard to net. Creel surveys are difficult due to the sporadic, wide spread nature of the sport fishery. Some catch sampling is done at the Thunder Bay Salmon Derby, and also with commercial incidental catch during the fall herring fishery.
