Varmint Hunting

Recommended Posts

Is there any animals here in the Thunder Bay region you can legally hunt and shoot while not intending to harvest the meat? I am of course reffering mainly to varmint and/or small game like squirrel or groundhog type animals. Thanks in advance for any info.

In order to hunt any species of small mammal a small game licence is required. Coyotes, wolves and foxes may be hunted during their respective open seasons, and with the appropriate game seals in possession, however the pelt must not be allowed to spoil as these animals are classified as furbearers. Other species which may be hunted are groundhog and porcupine, for which there is no closed season or limits. There is no prohibition against allowing flesh of these species to spoil because they are not classified as “game wildlife” under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act. Red squirrels are only permitted to be trapped by a licenced trapper. There is no open season in this area for grey (black) squirrels. Chipmunks are specially protected mammals, hunting them is prohibited
