Snotrocket 4 Report post Posted May 24, 2011 I thought you couldn't use smelts anymore on the inland lakes. The reason I'm asking this is because last week (May 9-13) there was a bunch of americans fishing in Lac des Mille Lac with them for pike. They caught all kinds of fish with them one was 20lbs. They said they got them from New Brunswick which made the smelts usable in Lac. I tried to tell them they couldn't use them but wasn't really sure about the rules. Just curious what the rules are? Guest MNR Report post Posted May 26, 2011 No where in the province are you allowed to use live smelt as bait. The possession and use of dead smelt as bait is currently prohibited in Fisheries Management Zone (FMZ) 2, 4 and 5. This can be found in the box entitled Other Zone Regulations . located in the sections for FMZ 2, 4 and 5 in the 2011 Recreational Fishing Summary. There isn't a restriction on the use of smelt as bait in Zone 6 where Lac Des Mille Lac is located.
