dgainer 4 Report post Posted October 15, 2014 New resident of Thunder Bay.Back home there where several creeks and small rivers the whitefish could be dipnetted this time of year. Is there any netting around Thunder Bay?

Guest buckshotbadass Report post Posted October 29, 2014 A few years ago I got a old 4' net from an old timer. Haven't had a chance to use it yet but I'm thinking next week will be the time to try with the full moon approaching. Hoping for a few whiteys to toss in the smoker

Mr. Canoehead 69 Report post Posted October 30, 2014 Every time I've gone to silver harbour the whitefish are visible with a flashlight but too far out to net. Not sure how people manage to net them there. My buddy was able to catch one on chartreuse spoon though.
Guest flyinfinn Report post Posted October 30, 2014 First put your flash light away, then get a 10 foot handle for your net. Biggest thing is to keep the flash light off and they will come right up on the bank to spawn.
fisherdude 69 Report post Posted October 30, 2014 Where abouts at silver harbour so you go? Off the little breakwall or?
sinker7 114 Report post Posted October 30, 2014 Where abouts at silver harbour so you go? Off the little breakwall or? Yes off the break wall, keep scooping and don't give up. The more the net is in the water the more chances of putting whitefish in it.
Zackcorbin1401 542 Report post Posted October 31, 2014 Would I be able to do this with a regular smelt net? I've never gone before
Zackcorbin1401 542 Report post Posted October 31, 2014 What other places besides superior hold whitefish that can be netted
sinker7 114 Report post Posted October 31, 2014 Would I be able to do this with a regular smelt net? I've never gone before A smelt net(nylon mesh) will do in a pinch but a salmon style landing net works best... 30"+ hoop with a 10ft or longer handle gives you a real advantage. Some die hard guys use the 4' square drop and lift nets.
sinker7 114 Report post Posted October 31, 2014 What other places besides superior hold whitefish that can be netted Dog Lake. Current areas are best but with the low water levels this fall it will be tougher. If you try Silver Harbour choose a night when the wind is blowing over a calm night. The rougher water makes the whitefish less spooky and will mask your presence.

Guest flyinfinn Report post Posted November 3, 2014 Hawk bay, hawkeye lake dumps into dog lake.
sinker7 114 Report post Posted November 4, 2014 Where on Dog Lake?? As previously mentioned Hawk Bay, East Bay.....any creeks or rivers with good current and hard bottom. If current is non existent due to low water gravel points or shorelines near deep water are also great but a little more challenging. Sandstone has a strong shore spawning population of whitefish.
