Hey everyone,

Don't forget to sign up for Squeers Lake experimental Lake Trout fishery. If you would like to fish the opening weekend (March 7th or 8th) applications are required and are due this Friday February 6th. For anyone who would like to fish any of the other days (March 9th through 16th) all you have to do is show up and sign in with the OMNR staff.

Hope to see you all out there

White tube jigs and jig flies work for me

Two of us headed out Saturday. The road in is snow packed with some wash-board. The trail in was good in the morning but turned to loose sugar everywhere at the end of the day. Need a semi-powerful machine to make the hill if you are towing a sleigh. The back bay had lots of deep snow - a good work-out if you were walking. No slush anywhere we went. Fishing was pretty consistent throughout the day. We landed 16 in total. The biggest was 8lbs. The other keepers were between 17-21.5". Only 2 fish in the 12" range. One of the best years as far as average size goes.

Fished various depths throughout the day. Caught fish from 35-65ft. The bite was not aggressive. Slow jigging and dead sticking worked equally well.

Forgot to mention the stats from the MNR station in the early post.

108 Anglers showed up on Saturday. When we were checking out there had been approx 120 trout caught and there was still another 5 or 6 groups that were still fishing.

Good luck.

Fishing was slow for us as compared to other years. We iced only 12, but the quality was better this year than others. Our smallest was 14" and our biggest was 23". We fished in 70' of water with lures, tubes, jigs & minnows and by far the bite for us was on jig & minnow. I'm pretty sure all our fish came off the bottom with maybe one willing to chase up a few feet then finally hit it. The trail was gouged coming out, but doable if you stayed center and stayed on throttle. Good luck to the rest of the people still planning on going out!
