James01 223 Report post Posted April 26, 2018 Smelting through holes in the ice... I envision people taking turns dipping in a small hole. I wonder what a spring like this will mean for the smelt. They run for such a short amount of time, and they must be bursting with eggs and milk. Bobber Down 921 Report post Posted April 28, 2018 Checked the water temp at Mcvicar Creek tonight and it was close to 0c or 33f. It will be awhile till the water warms up to 5c or 42f, the preferred spawning temps for smelts. There is lots of ice under the water yet. The overnight temps are still pretty low and only a slight chance of rain next week. My guess for the big spawn would be in the second week of May this year.
