Bah! Had me all hot and bothered for a minute there - was just about to start hunting for buckets.

Thinking this coming weekend - would help if we get some rain to get things moving.

Thoughts?

Smelting through holes in the ice... I envision people taking turns dipping in a small hole. ;)

I wonder what a spring like this will mean for the smelt. They run for such a short amount of time, and they must be bursting with eggs and milk. Maybe there are schools of horny little smelt getting it on under the ice.

I heard a rumor that people are starting to catch smelt... any truth to this?

And, if so, where?

Checked the water temp at Mcvicar Creek tonight and it was close to 0c or 33f. It will be awhile till the water warms up to 5c or 42f, the preferred spawning temps for smelts. There is lots of ice under the water yet. The overnight temps are still pretty low and only a slight chance of rain next week. My guess for the big spawn would be in the second week of May this year.

A few pics of Mcvics today. Water is cold and dirty. Ice cover at the mouth goes all the way to the breakwall. Didn't see anyone fishing when I was there.
