IGANCE, Ont. -- A moose-hunting trip to northwestern Ontario proved to be a costly venture for a Toronto-area man.

A Justice of the Peace has fined a Brampton resident $4000 for discharging a firearm on a travelled roadway.

Court was told that Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry conservation officers interviewed several hunters as they were hanging a harvested moose at an Ignace-area resort in October, 2017.

Further investigation revealed that one of the men had spotted a bull moose while he was riding in an off-road vehicle. He stopped, got out of the vehicle and fired at the animal while both he and the moose were on the edge of the road.

The moose was later harvested and tagged by another member of his party.

After the charge was laid, the moose was forfeited to the Crown and donated to charity.
