James01 223 Report post Posted April 24, 2020 I want to get out … but I still have smelts from last year - probably become Lake Superior bait. I really don't like them all that much - one meal and I am good for the year. And I hate cleaning them. Perhaps I will go and practice catch and release - I can only imagine the looks I would get. Here's one from last year. ... I kid. James01 223 Report post Posted April 24, 2020 This kind of thing will not be happening this year … I am curious what social distancing smelt fishing will look like. klatown 3 Report post Posted April 24, 2020 As someone who's never smelted before, can I get any tips on how to start? Not asking for secret spots or anything.
Thefishleclair 175 Report post Posted April 24, 2020 Buy a smelt net. Sup into water and scoop down with current scrapping the bottom Lift up and look to see if you got smelts. If you get some dump into yer bucket or carrying device. Most any river mouth that dumps into Lake Superior will get a run and going when it’s dark is best. Watch for slippery rocks. 1 Quote Grumpas' Baits Check it out on FB
Beeman 1 Report post Posted April 25, 2020 Klatown,, there are not secret spots, any and every small creek coming on off lake superior,, get a smelt net or borrow one and a bucket, hip waders are great to get out into the water and a headlamp. If you drive around and see lamps down by a creek that's a good spot to check out.. McKenzie is always good and closer to town lots of people go under the overpass by the harbour. As far as nets go, the larger nets work well for scooping in deeper water but the smaller all metal mesh ones are easier to dump into a pail if you are on your own and don't get hung up on rocks, sometimes they are running so fast you are done in 10 minutes other times they take a while to get going and may not be really running fast until after midnight if at all. Just go out and have at it.. if it is your first time don't try to fill a 5 gallon pail,, get a few dozen, see if you actually like cleaning them and cook a few up you can always go out the next night.
