oyo 127 Report post Posted May 7, 2020 46 minutes ago, Zackcorbin1401 said: 4° in vics this am. So tonight’s the night, or do you find the in town rivers much warmer than the out of town ones.
Commonsense 4 Report post Posted May 7, 2020 Current river tends to be sitting colder longer than out of town rivers, at least this year anyway. Lake Superior water temp data shows Mck. River warming up faster than Current. Went out last night to CR. 10-1am got 3/4 pail. If we don't get a cold front smelts should be running for awhile still, even though they started to trickle in about two weeks ago.
oyo 127 Report post Posted May 7, 2020 Where do you get the water temps? That would be a handy link to bookmark if you can share

Commonsense 4 Report post Posted May 7, 2020 Here is a link that might help narrow the time for the smelt run ,I use it every year and have always got smelt. But there are other factors that affect the run.😥 This is surface water temperature. Smelt spawn at 5 to 7C or 42-44F . Feel free to correct me. Temperatures are shown in F degrees. Zoom in to enlarge to make temp gradiant easier to see. Any questions? Should be commonsense. Hope the link works and good luck. https://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/ofs/ofs_animation.shtml?ofsregion=ls&subdomain=0&model_type=wtemp_nowcast

Zackcorbin1401 542 Report post Posted May 8, 2020 I love going for smelts about 2 weeks after everyone stops and it’s usually the best time and warm out. Last year no one in sight at cr filled a 5 gal in 4scoops
PajamaSquirrel 20 Report post Posted May 9, 2020 Went to McKenzie last night from 11 to 1. Very slow with 2 of us scooping continually and not much action from the few around us. Maybe enough smelts for supper tonight. Overheard a guy saying they were running better about 10:30 . We still had fun with the family though.
