mad scientist 140 Report post Posted March 3, 2021 The portage from the Stanton Bay parking lot to the lake is super easy...it's mostly boardwalk. Pickerel Lake can get really(!) windy...wind will be on your starboard side coming out of Stanton Bay. Putting in at Stanton helps avoid the worst of the wind, since you can shelter in the islands, but if you want to avoid an unpleasant paddle across Pickerel, plan your trip so you're crossing that lake earlier in the morning or after supper. 1 Quote I'm going out to fish. - John 21:
363outdoors 1 Report post Posted March 3, 2021 Its been decades since we canoed Quetico but Stanton Bay was always our point of entry. At that time there were some wet spots along the portage with some boardwalk, as ms mentioned it might have been improved. We did canoe into Rawn and Sturgeon but mostly we would paddle south to the islands and tent starting May long up to Labour Day and only once encountered a group of teens paddling west as a school group, area was underutilized and fishing was good to spectacular. Would watch the turtles stage along sandy beach to lay eggs, lotta wildlife with good memories. Only downside was the wood ticks. We would paddle across main lake late morning entering and later in afternoon leaving and were fortunate winds were not an issue. Enjoy your trip

poz 35 Report post Posted March 4, 2021 Stanton bay portage is very good and you will miss most of the wind rough water heading to Rawn. Can get real choppy coming out of Stanton so hot that early morning. After that fairly sheltered. Been into buckingham a couple of times good fishing and some huge snappers. Great trip. efloen 3 Report post Posted March 4, 2021 I have paddled through Pickerel Lake many times from both Stanton Bay and French Lake and I don't think you save much time leaving from Stanton by the time you drive there and hike your stuff down to the lake. You can easily make it to Rawn Lake in one day leaving from French even if you stop at one of the many beaches along the way.
Porter Ross 6 Report post Posted March 6, 2021 Went to Rawn Lake a few years ago. Lots of smallish walleyes. Kind of a long, swampy, non-fishy paddle from Pickerel. Can affirm the healthy snapping turtle population. Didn't get any trout, thermocline on Rawn was very visible on depthfinder, and pretty shallow for June.
