Neversink 0 Report post Posted April 18, 2021 Went out last night to McVicar's. Too soon. Usually there are 1 or 2 smelts that someone on the bank catches. Only rumors of a couple smelts being caught were floating around the on shore talk, and nobody said which river they came from...so it's a rumor. Also, regarding COVID distancing protocols, this is one of those events where a lot of people line the banks. I started to feel a bit uncomfortable as the cars started to arrive around 11pm. The next time I go I'm going to aim for off peak timings...say 2am and I'm going to try a less popular river. There is enough for everyone, but we need to spread out our fishing times and locations. PajamaSquirrel 20 Report post Posted April 24, 2021 Warming temperatures and ice is gone? Check Full moon (April 26th)? Check Dandelions in the neighourhood? No. Went out to McKenzie last night. Two of us scooped continually for 1 1/2 hours and ended up with 20 smelts as our reward. We had chest waders and decent nets and our "honey holes" pretty much to ourselves. About a dozen people when we got there and many came and went rather quickly through the night. Not much action, the smelt run is just beginning. Someone near us scooped a decent sized sucker or whitefish and let it go right away. Seen a few people go for a brief swim - all good fun. Have to try again another night - after watching for the dandelions poking up through the new snow of course. 😁
Duhaus 47 Report post Posted April 24, 2021 Clearly PJSquirrel you need to wait and check your last box on your list before you will see a quick dip and a fill of a bucket. Squirrels aren’t known for their patience though. 😜
Commonsense 4 Report post Posted April 24, 2021 Here is a link to Lake Superior surface water temps. Gives some idea of how things are warming up. There is other info that may be useful there also. The amount of time that will take with the current forecast.... #watchyourlawn 😎

James01 223 Report post Posted May 6, 2021 My job has me driving late into the night. A few years ago I stopped to stretch my legs at Fisherman's Park. It was late, and a few weeks after the smelt run supposedly ended. Everyone had given up by this point ... there was nobody at the river, and the parking area was empty - except for a curious fox. I walked down to the river's edge, flashlight in hand (because it was dark), and the river was thick with smelt. I could have filled pails by hand. I returned the next night, once again to stretch my legs, and this time purposely to have a look. This time there were two guys netting smelt, they kindly filled a grocery bag for me with a single scoop. It's worth pointing out that I was 'smelting' that year, and I did well a few weeks prior (so, it's not the case that everyone simply missed the run). Perhaps it's the temperature that had them running 'late,' maybe the run is longer than most people assume, whatever it is - or was - it's worth thinking 'outside the net' sometimes. Is the smelt run over? Maybe, but its probably still worth having a look. 2 1 Quote Many Men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.- Henry David Thoreau

Nicky 0 Report post Posted April 25, 2022 OK it's 2022. There is a few feet of snow still, but the rivers are open. What's up with the run this year? I'm guessing that the water temperature is low. Flows are still low, and the real melt is only just starting.
