Steelman and Americans

Recommended Posts

Steelman it sounds like you have a problems with Americans in general by reading some of your posts. If one of us has offended you then let me apologize for them and maybe we can move on then.

Don't take it personal Bernie not all of us think that way. I personally have many great memories of my time spent fishing with Americans in fact when I got married I even invited some of them to my wedding.

Barry.

Ditto for me as well.

I dont want to be guilty of painting with a wide brush either but my experiences with Americans has all been great. I went to school in the US and I was prepared to meet fish and game hogging cowboys, and it couldnt be farther from the truth.

In fact, I do know more than just a few canadians like that!

Bernie I got caught up with this same subject last year, only a very small percentage of our northern neighbors feel the way Steelman does. On the other side of the coin the same thing applies to people from our side of the border.

I have been going north of the border for 30 years, met a ton of people and for the most part been treated very well. Funny thing my worst experience north of the border came from a fish camp that was owned by Americans.

I try to treat everyone with respect no matter where their from, but you can't please everyone all the time.

Hey Bernie,

You're probably right, somebody had a bad experience (or a couple) and needed to vent somewhat. I have seen this expressed through boards like this numerous times by vacationing Americans to Canadian lodges. They took a trip and felt they got screwed over in some capacity by the operator (who may even be American), and they vent about how disgusted they are with the entire industry. Some may have been legitimately screwed over, but just overreact immediately or later on if they get stirred the wrong way, and start jawing on anybody.

Here is something that was said by someone south of the border a few days ago on another fishing forum...

"You Canadians are a bunch of whining, petty, foolish socialist, uneducated lumberjacks.

And that is putting it nicely.

You deserve the socialist society you live under, you can't handle democracy, because your lame parliment can't handle decision making from a market based society."

Now I could write a book in response to this (sounds like some guy that has spent a couple weeks max in Canada and just got finished a 2nd year undergraduate "US in the context of North America" course, taught by a right-wing blowhard who has spent even less time in Canada), but this was in a thread discussing regulations, camp rules and fishing vacation motivations; so the author was obviously taking the conversation to a whole other (unneeded) level. I know I have been guilty of such as well a couple times over the years, and later read what I wrote thinking 'that was pretty dumb.'

In fishing the NW Ontario area over 30 years, I've found the people to be uniformly warm and genuine, with very little anti-American sentiment. A misanthropic posture, I suppose, infects all groups

There are good and bad guys north and south of the border. Period. Ensure you're not one of them, control the things you can. I've never had a bad experience with American fisherman. Case closed as far as I'm concerned.
