I just got a 14 foot aluminum boat and motor and want to register it, where do I go? what type of information do I need to bring, and how much does it cost?

And what are the safety regulations, what do you need to have in your boat for it to be legal on the water, is 1 oar okay, what needs to be in the emergency kit, etc? thank you very much, your reply will be greatly appreciated!

The new boating safety regulations and the registration of boats in Canada are administered by the Federal Government, more specifically Transport Canada. New safety regulations were introduced in April of 1999. In Ontario, any Police agency, municipal, provincial (OPP), federal (RCMP) or aboriginal (NAPS) and Conservation Officers and Park Wardens (in provincial parks) can enforce the safety provisions of the Small Vessel Regulations.

Please use the links below to view the federal government website for information on registering your boat and obtaining application forms:

The boating safety regulations were introduced by the federal government to help reduce the number of boating fatalities and accidents that occur each year. Highlights of the changes include the introduction of:

• minimum age limits for operating power boats above 10 horsepower and personal water craft;

• mandatory operator competency requirements, being phased in over 10 years, for operators of powered boats used for recreational purposes; and

• new minimum safety equipment and operation standards affecting all boats.

The Boating Safety Infoline is 1-800-267-6687.

The following link will take you to the “Safe Boating Guide” which outlines safety equipment requirements for various types of watercraft.
