Current River park

Recommended Posts

Guest TerryK

The NSSA in conjunction with the City of Thunder Bay, and hopefully other contributors is planning a park at the mouth of the Current River, starting in the spring (tentatively). So far, Hydro One has donated the use of some heavy equipment and we are pursuing other sponsors as well. If you have any ideas about what you would like to see done with this land, feel free to share your ideas with any NSSA executive. We will also be looking for volunteers to help clean up the area as stage one of the project.

Park boundary is outlined in red.

Sounds like a fantastic idea! It is a frigin dumping ground right now. It will tie in with the trail system hopefully.

George, the city already has plans to extend the trail and in fact they started last fall. In the spring it will be brought from the top of the ridge on the casino grounds down to Cumberland St. There will be a pedestrian bridge built eventually across the river to bring the trail to the East side of the river. So as you can see, the timing is perfect for this park!

Hey Terry,

I wouldn't mind helping out with the clean up. I am out of town from Feb 2nd till April 2nd for training. After that the snow should be "somewhat melted" or gone. Depending on what 12 hours shift I am on, I should be able to volunteer some time. I will bring my son as well. It should be a good experience for him even though he will only be 4. Keep me updated I will be checking the site while I am away.

Rather than the name Clark Park, which most people are referring to the proposed park as, for the record I want it to be known that I submit the name of this new park to be "Steelheader Run".

What are the plans in regards to the boat launch area? If upgrades will there be a launching fee or will it remain as is? Are there plans available to view Terry?

Just wondering if they are planning on increasing the parking area? I think a park is a great idea but the area to park right now would be limited if there was increased usage of this area.

Nice to see the city develop these areas! Makes our city that much more appealing.

Moop: I will definitely keep everyone updated as to whats going on and when we will need help. I'm sure it will be after the steelhead run is done! lol

George: I like "Fishermans Park" myself. Maybe we should have a "name the park" contest?????

Jay: The boat launch is not in the park plans...yet. DFO built the launch and docks, but it is city owned property. No one really seems to know what the deal was or who made it lol. Parking will be increased but there are no concrete plans as to where it will be yet. The strip of land that used to be the parking lot for Portship is also city owned so if extra parking is needed the land is there.

It's pretty cool because the city is letting us run with our ideas.

Terry,

I'm not sure who is heading this up, but if things are in the planning stages, I would suggest invoking the expertise of the School of Outdoor Recreation, Parks and Tourism to get some ideas and get feedback on various proposals. In my senior year, I participated in an extensive review of the THEN Waterfront Redevelopment Plan (which has been changed a couple times since, LOL). This type of thing is the real-world practical application that combines with the piles of theory.

Thanks NWO, I believe those groups may have been mentioned in our discussions but if not, I'll definitely bring them up next time we meet. Heading up this project are Frank Edgson, George Clark, myself and Lorne Allard is now involved as well. We could really use your input if you can make our January meeting!

Thanks!

I live in Current River and have fished that river more times than I can possibly count. And I've picked up dozens of garbage bags worth of garbage left behind. I would absolutely love to see some improvements in that area and am willing to help in any way I can, I am also working out of town starting in May but when im in town I am willing to put forth as many hours and hands as I can. Im glad this is happening, it means alot to me, my home waters indeed. Thanks very very much Terry.

Thanks Brodie, we appreciate the offer and I will let everyone know when the cleanup is to take place. I too have spend MANY a day fishing the entire length of the Current since I grew up in the Current River area and the establishment of a viable steelhead population in the Current has been a lifelong dream of mine. This park is a great way to draw a little attention to our club and it's projects, as well as doing something about the un-utilized land near the river.

Keep in mind also, that I'm just part of the group of three NSSA executive members that volunteered to take on this project, as well as former Alderman Lorne Allard.

Fish, this planning is just in the very infancy stages, so much to consider, so much contacting to be made for grants or whatever other funding we can find, but input is appreciated, and since this park was an idea being presented to the NSSA and its membership, I would only think that fishing would still be allowed, since one of the club's mandate is to keeping fishing opportunities open.
